Moelis LA SA to GS/MS NY FT possible?

A friend of mine accepted an offer for Moelis LA for their 2021 SA but really wants to be in New York full time. If he wanted to could he recruit for FT in NY even though it's very difficult? And what are the chances of going to Goldman/Morgan Stanley?

Not sure why your "friend" would want to leave Moelis LA, most NY groups would be a downgrade. If he really wants to be in NY long-term then he can easily recruit for an associate position post-banking. The office sends a lot of analysts to NY MF PE (i.e. Centerbridge, Blackstone, Carlyle, etc).

If it's for personal reasons, with a strong reason behind why NY over LA then they won't have any trouble lateraling FT to a top BB or another EB. However, I'd caution downgrading when recruiting for FT. In my opinion, the switch would only be comparable for GS TMT, MS M&A, or EVR M&A.

Yeah Moelis LA is a great group so you can recruit out. There's plenty of good boutiques in NY too and I can tell you from experience that Moelis LA and GS/MS take very different people so might want to focus more on boutiques as the vibe of the person might fit better. Also you cannot jump from Moelis LA summer to NY full time.

Bumping this as I am also wondering if you have a Moelis LA SA, could you recruit at GS/MS in NYC for FT?

Why would you want to re-recruit? Unless its GS TMT, which has comparable exits, most groups would be a downgrade

Well, GS TMT would be the preferred group but more so need to be in NYC for personal reasons. Would this be possible?

I think when I was at MC, we had some LA people come over to NYC. I think Nick Jiang might have been an LA guy who came to NYC. Prob other people too. I think the LA office is considered to be the top office in terms of quality maybe and would think a Moelis LA kid who would want to move to a different office anywhere in the firm would prob be welcome. But just a thought. I don’t know too much
