Money Does Buy Happiness

Let me preface by saying this isn't a brag post. Even though I do well for myself ($600K base, 200% bonus potential, P/E, NYC), it wasn't always like this. Not even close. If I could make it, so can you. I don't want to be envied, but rather inspirational.

Grew up lower middle class, first to go to college at semi-target. Then IB at a boutique firm, no MBA, and now at a tiny PE firm where I wear multiple hats (investing, business development, portfolio monitoring, IR...hence my comp).

Growing up, saw my parents struggle. Our family car always needed repairs. Wore hand me down clothes. Sacks lunches at school. Didn't participate in ECs due to costs. List goes on and on. Definitely had self esteem issues, which persisted in college, but did get better.

NOW?

Bought my parents a custom condo in all cash. Put some money down and bought myself one, too. They're in the suburbs. Being relatively young, I opted for the city. My unit is only 1,500 SF, but every single finish is high-end. IMO, it's about quality, not quantity. Bought myself an R8 a couple years ago (needed something sporty with AWD). People (including VERY attractive women) stop me all the time. I laugh everytime, remembering the nerd I used to be in high school, only 15 years ago.

Parents are retired (give them a healthy annual stipend), health care coverage is best in class. No doubt it would suck to lose my job, but with $$$, wouldn't be in any rush to find another gig.

My MDs literally make 5x more than I do, so even in my case, I've only scratched the surface. Never feel hopeless, my life didn't turn out like this until 8 years ago.

ANYTHING is possible in the USA!

I have a question about the attractive women that stop you- doesn't this make it harder for you to try and find the one since there's no way of knowing whether she's after your personality or after your money?

That's why you gotta vet them. Gold diggers are gold diggers, but even high achieving women want someone of their own caliber. So the next time women say some shit like "I don't care about money", that is total BS, but it may be subconscious. Women are attracted to men that can provide, even if they're already independent. Has to do with biology, evolution, and primal instinct.

In high school, didn't get any attention from females, but gold diggers or not, it does feel good to get attention, especially when it should be the other way around.

Can't imagine what it feels like to be a celebrity.

If I were you, I'd smash and dash on the ones that stop you. Having money isn't a negative when women are interested, but I'm quite perceptive and it's too easy to spot when women are clearly just wide eyed and oblivious. Plus, that's an easy pull, which is what we all want when it comes to getting laid, but not necessarily for the future mother/wife.

Don’t know why you got the monkey shits. I actually enjoy your posts.

Still in college myself, but do hope to end up in a similar situation one day. Not just for myself but for my family as well, they’ve sacrificed quite a bit and still do. I see your point in how money buys happiness but don’t you ever want to settle down one day? Wouldn’t that be more fulfilling in the long run? Or are you one of those bachelors for life?

Always remember, there will be haters no matter where you are. Fact of life. Just look the at losers below. Keep hustling and working hard, and if we ever cross paths, I'll hook you up however I can.

Besides the R8, I don't really have anything else I splurge on. Used to eat fancy meals regularly, but no more with the pandemic. I'm in a relationship and think I'll propose in the next 2 years or sooner. Not sure about kids though.

I mean people can talk shit but its fine to be happy with your accomplishments, and equally fine to share them, especially like you did, with actual details rather than just ending the post at your comp. Good shit buddy, keep it rollin.

Hell yeah. I make about $50k and even with that I'm so much happier than how I was growing up. It's great not having to worry about rent, having to feed yourself, or worrying about the car. The more money you make the more things you can cross of your worry list and the more fun things you can do. Eventually if you make enough money you can stop being a serf and own your own home. Make a mittle more and you don't have to worry about home repairs. Money can also buy influence and help the poor.**

I hope to make a lot more money. I want to buy a house, be able to afford house, health insurance, therapist and a sugar baby. I'd like to be free of my financial worries so I can focus on my existential worries that no amount of money will fix... HAHA JK with that kind of cash I can hire a therapist to help me fix those.

**More of a general comment, not specific to this post. Making money via wage supression then "helping" the poor is not helping the poor. Sure, you can be a dick and not help them in any regard, but giving with one hand, what you take with the other is not "helping."

There might be some correlation between money and happiness.  I have money but it is not something I value all that much.  I want to be able to live comfortably and while I do have a large home and a nice car, I don't feel the need to get a bigger house or a fancier car.  Different strokes for different folks.  I have always been more impressed with people who are highly intelligent and who are humble about it.  It is more interesting to have a conversation with someone who is smart compared to someone who has a lot of money.  I also place a high value on health and fitness.  More recently, I have been on a quasi quest to add a bit more muscle through different exercises.
