Monkey Shitting A Bad Thing? (What's A Better System)
I've seen a few comments edited after being piled with monkey shit saying "edited because of monkey shit", which in my opinion is a consequence of a bad system if viewpoints that are controversial or wrong are deleted. The system enables the person who posted to delete (if you keep getting monkey shit for keeping the post up, why would you keep it up).
Some suggestions I have are to cap the amount monkey shit actually affects a person at 5 or 10 for example, or "freeze" a post that gets a lot of monkey shit if you want to make people think before they post things. I'm sure you all have smart suggestions.
I think this is bad, and especially because this site blends social/serious topics and can often bandwagon a certain point of view. Many people continue to bash on a thread or reiterate points without trying to bring up new points of view or expression, especially in popular threads that lean one way (e.g. people expressing socialist views and everyone bandwagon against). That's an example which is good (people should shit on socialism mercilessly), but in many cases I've seen where MS'ing does not help and can be a deterrent to differing views. Yes, I'm being hypocritical about the socialism thing but am kind of joking of course.
Disclaimer I am not trying to jump on any bandwagon by making this complaint if I am. Ha.
Thanks for the comment. We've made a lot of modifications over the years to make it harder for any one person to atatck another (limits on # of MS someone can throw in 24hrs, etc)...and we've also made it harder to edit your own content once 24hrs have passed (you have to email in support, etc). We don't, however, want to reduce this too much since our moderation team is only a certain size and it takes a lot of work every day to moderate this forum.
Between moving discussions to the right categories to removing spam to trying to keep things civil in an election year.
But yes, we're open to ideas on the details...as long as we think about the potential additional cost to the support team or if not being able to delete your own comment ends up deterring people more in another way?
Having been on the website for a little while, I'd like to point out that the MS system has been an improvement over time, so kudos!
