Not necessary for every job but your options will be limited without it. Moreover, as great a city as Montreal is, it is a tertiary one for finance and has few/no HF or PE shops of note, outside the pension funds (where you will have to know French).

Thanks so much

In everyone's experience: when seeking opportunities abroad is it better to network your way into a company or to work somewhere in the states then attempt to transfer abroad within the company?

Montreal is pretty fun... born and raised
It really depends on the firms I would say. Because MTL IS in Canada, you will definetly find firms with alot of english speaking employees. If you look at banks such as RBC you will be fine because it is primarly english speaking. My parents have worked in MTL for 40+ years and they speak ALOT of english. After all we are isolated in an english speaking continent.

That's definitely good news, thank you. Believe it or not one of my favorite things about MTL is the food. I'm going soon and Allo Mon Coco is first on my list of places to go lol
