Mormon invasion in banking
In all seriousness, I am beginning to notice a huge penetration of Mormons in banking and senior leaders at many of the most reputable firms on street openly marketing their religion for everything from networking to even recruiting. I honestly don't care for people's beliefs as long as it remains out of the workplace, but is it just me or does anyone find this creepy? The evidence is surmounting with insane placements from schools like BYU on par with Wharton (wtf?) and GS all of a sudden with their Salt Lake City operations.
Disclaimer: I am an atheist.
I wouldn't say that BYU is getting placement on par with Wharton except for GS in SL. And that's just because they're doing regional recruiting and BYU is one of the best universities in Utah.
I would also say that GS's reasons for working in Utah are financial and not religious.
I've got a ton of Mormon friends, any many that went to BYU, but honestly, who cares what's happening in SLC?
I think mormon's are highly recruited because they have a very high level of discipline. If you think about it, they can't drink, swear, or even take in caffeine. It could also be a diversity thing
I actually take back my post. Was going to reply "but the religion is explicitly advertised and isn't it borderline discrimination to recruit people for their religion?". Then I remembered wonderful things like diversity recruiting for blacks, latinos, native americans.
Definitely not on par with wharton, but there are many exceptionally disciplined students at BYU. and they are typically older after 2 years of mission.
Side note: lots of hot corruptible girls at BYU. Might make things a little better in Utah.
not creepy, the hyperbole surrounding mormons and the idea that their religion is somehow a "cult" that is any more bizarre than all of the things other religious belief is ignorant. i welcome mormons in the workplace, like someone said, the guys i've met are disciplined and mature.
the LDS network is a very strong network in business for whatever reason. those folks take care of each other, and unless you see a whole bunch of incompetent mormons running things (i highly doubt that they're incompetent), there shouldn't be an issue. buck up old chap.
also, keep in mind that a devout mormon boy will turn down Harvard to go to BYU in many cases because religion is his priority. i wouldn't be surprised if the upper echelon of students at BYU were on par with kids at many of the target schools.
This actually has less to do with religion and more to do with the fact that you can go to BYU for free and pocket everything you make in banking because you have no student loans. 31+ ACT = Free Tuition. (Though tuition is normally $4800/year at BYU)
We'd all rather go to Harvard, but it's simple economics
While it's definitely true that BYU is cheaper, the 31+ ACT for free tuition isn't true. I got a 32 on the ACT with a 3.85 GPA and I didn't get any scholarships at BYU.
.
The mormon's I've met seem like they'd be easy to work with. The idea of a horrible Associate/VP/MD who is also mormon just doesn't seem congruent in my mind.
They probably bother me less than devoutly religious people of other denominations. They generally don't try to convert you; I guess they get it out of their system during the missionary phase.
wow interesting insights
i've had a mormon analyst in my team at one point... really nice guy, never bothered anyone. though they are generally more boring since you can't go out and drink with them
Mormons are easily the best coworkers of any definable group of people.
