Move from IT to Strategy / Management
I recently started at Deloitte as a Sr Consultant within the Technology arm of their Consulting practice. I am an experienced hire (4.5 years out of undergrad with significant industry experience) and am in a niche of their service line related to specific systems and industries. I really think IT consulting is certainly a great place to be, however I want to eventually get to strategy and management. In other words, I don't want my job eventually sent to india, nor do I want to be a "warm body" to rotate around as a systems expert. Fortunately, in my practice the strategy and execution of the technology doesn't differ much... I might be advising on system configuration, drafting proposals for vendor selection, or doing PMO activities, etc. My question is: how hard is it to make a transition across industries and service lines? Would it be something I would have to attain my MBA for first? I would love to jump across to S&O or something similar.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! I have a BA in business management so it's not like I'm a CS guy or anything. I eventually plan on getting an MBA and initially thought that would be the time to try and make a switch. I'm not necessarily looking for an MBB type organization down the road, Deloitte is just fine with me.
easiest way: MBA challenging way: Networking within the firm to find a strategic project staffer who will staff you and help you build experience, which then you can leverage to lateral or request for permanent group transfer
Moving from BTA to S&O at Deloitte, or any other similar firm (Accenture, etc) is very unlikely. IT Consulting and Strategy Consulting are very different careers, with entirely different set of skill sets. Not to mention, most Strategy Consulting firms have a very standardized way of hiring. (recruiting most of new hires from target undergrads and MBAs)
Your best (and only realistic) bet is to get a top 10 MBA and get an offer from a Strategy Consulting firm during MBA OCR.
