Moving from MO INTL Equities to MO Commodities/Jr Trading

Before I get into this, let me give you a quick background:

  • I went to a non-target private school
  • Worked in the logistics industry from when I was 18-24 (currently 24)
  • Started working a MO role in Intl Equities (allocations, bookings, confirms, etc) a few months ago

I went up to NYC for training when I started and it was really eye opening (I don't work in NYC). I had talked to an MD at BB for the past year and a half (he's a friend of a friend). The guy works in their commodity division and I was fortunate to finally get drinks w/ him in person and discuss future career options. He told me if I was serious about working in commodities, I should look into switching from equities MO to commodities MO. He is also going to let me know if something opens up on his end and try and get me in if/when that happens.

A trader at my bank in equities also referred me to his friend at another BB in Houston that is a director working in commodities. I was fortunate enough to talk to him last week about breaking into the industry and he said the same thing: try switching to MO commodity role. He said he would also keep an eye out for that or jr. trading and to read up on options in the mean time.

The two questions I have are:

1) Is it too early to ask for a switch within my company? Heads are rolling at all WS firms and I don't want to come off as "too hungry", advice another trader at my firm gave me.

2) Is this the only way to break in or should I look at another route?

Any other advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
