Moving into Asia PE with consulting & banking background

From reading the posts here, I think there are some really credible PE guys here so I thought I'd like to seek some advice from you. It's a PE question but the banking board is more active so I am posting it here. I spent three years with Mck/BCG in Asia after college in the US, and I'm attending a top 3 B school now. I am graduating this year and joining a BB (IBD) in New York as an Associate. Some questions:

  • What are my chances of moving to a mega PE fund in Asia after, say, 2-3 years on Wall Street? I often heard that Associate --> PE is close to impossible.
  • After 2-3 years on Wall Street, would I join, say, Carlyle (if I get in, LOL) as a senior associate or as a principal?

I realize that in the US, many M/B/B analysts move to PE after 2 years and the recruiting process is very structured. In Asia it's different though - PE positions were much more limited (at least during my time) and most funds recruit banking analysts, not consultants.
