MSF - personal experiences
What’s up guys and gals...
If all goes as planned, I will be heading off to an MSF program starting next summer. By that time, I will have a shade over 1.75 years FT WE in BB PWM. It just so happens that my top choice (UIUC) values having some work experience and the average student has 1.5 years FT under their belt.
I have seen this topic discussed before (i.e. Anthony mentioning his 3 years WE made MSF OCR a bitch, some MSFs favoring prior WE, too much WE for analyst role/too little for associate role, etc.) but I was wondering if anyone here can share their personal experience dealing with this?
I have a few banana's for anyone with 1-2 years experience and is either currently getting their MSF or has recently graduated and can share their experiences with OCR, networking, and how you are viewed by potential employers.
I appreciate the help!

Yeah, anyone who chimes in and is interested in giving me a student review would be greatly appreciated.
It just so happens that:
1) I graduated from UIUC MSF 2 months ago; and
2) I still owe ANT a review.
If either of you care, PM pointed/specific questions
Also, I sometimes have stupid work hours. So forgive me if I dont respond in a timely manner
Haha, completely forgot, but yeah, PM me whenever you get some free time.
Cries - You da man... I'm sending a naner and a PM your way now
Anthony - Any stories about NOVA kids that experienced this?
At MIT MFin now, with 1.5 yrs FT WE. Just started a month ago, but thus far my impression is that work experience will not be a problem. We have access to MBA and undergrad recruiting, so whatever role you are looking for you can get an interview. Then it is all up to you. Also, some companies that will remain unnamed have designed roles specifically targeted to MFin students that are between entry level and post-MBA level - think financial consulting. Additionally, many companies specifically recruit MFin students only, with no regard for work experience. BB (GS, MS) Quant Finance for example just announced they are recruiting MFins only this year.
Let me know if you have further specific questions.
+1 ... thanks for the info
Just wondering why those companies should remain unnamed? Also, any other examples besides quant?
I suppose there really isn't a reason for them to remain unnamed. The one I was thinking of was Deloitte's financial consulting practice that has allegedly been recruiting heavily enough in the past that they designed a special role for the program. As of now, I can't think of any other examples besides quant - it is quite early in the recruiting season and no-one else has set up specific presentations to the MFin students only. However, for what its worth, the Class of 2010 placement report seems to be representative of the interests of the students, and I suspect industry/function breakdown will look similar this year. Available at http://mitsloan.mit.edu/pdf/Class_of_2010_Master_of_Finance_Employment_…. I should point out that the sample size of that report is tiny, so surprisingly accurate in my opinion.
I think MIT is going to be the exception to many MSF programs.
haha yea not too applicable to my situation but I said SB for info and he provided it so I had to stick to my word
Yea that's why I asked, I had a hunch you were talking about Delloite's financial consulting program... just curious, do you have a description of what that deptartment does/entry level responsibilities?
