MSF Programs, should I retake the GMAT? US Applicant
So I have now taken the GMAT 2x, once after about 3 weeks prep, and the second after 4 additional weeks. The first time I scored 640 44q 34v 5IR, and the second time I scored 680 43q 41v 7IR. I know the 43 Q score is low, and honestly I took two gmatprep practice tests with about 1 week before the second test that I scored 45q on both times. I went through all of the MGMAT books in my 4 weeks of prep before the second test, dedicating an equal amount of time to each of them so that I would cover all the basics. I am surprised by both my high verbal score and my lower quant score. I was usually in the 37-39v range on the practice tests and 45 and 45 for Q as mentioned earlier.
My goal is to attend an MSF program upon graduation, so I have little work experience, although I have been working in an entry level accounting position for the last year while in school. I am a US candidate from a non-target, accredited university with a 3.74 gpa, a Finance major, and Accounting and Stats minors. I also have pretty solid extra curriculars, holding top leadership positions in a few clubs, and I am debating if I want to try and install a chapter of another established honor society on my campus or not. I spoke with the dean already about it, so it is a possibility. Even though my gpa is high, when I started school I dropped a ton of classes and had to repeat some courses that I pretty much stopped going to (all intro level courses), which lead to me taking time off from school. However, since I came back I have maintained a 4.0 for the last 2 and half years (in all upper level courses), and repeated lower level courses that I had bad grades in, which accounts for my higher GPA.
So, based on my profile, would you guys recommend that I retake the GMAT to improve on my Q score or not? I wouldn't be able to take the test again until January of this year when classes are done this semester, which would put me dangerously close to the 2nd round deadlines at most programs (early February). I am targeting UT Austin, Vanderbilt, WUSTL, USC, BC, or Notre Dame. My goal is to break into banking (even if it is at a boutique), and I know that will be nearly impossible with the undergrad name I currently have on my resume, which provides my motivation for pursuing the MSF program. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
3.8 gpa, 680 GMAT, in at most of those schools. ND is all about fit. USC is choosy, but you're in the range for all.
Relax, craft your essays and make sure your resume is up to snuff and you'll be fine.
