Mumbai.... Ohh God

I have been in mumbai ( for 3 days i came) just top visit my parents birth place and my grandparents, and my dad is showing me around the Bombay Stock Exchange and such.

So far I have experienced
- my gums sore (from plane ride)
- some local (gangsta) wanting to fight my dad and me because we told him to give our chair back that he stole
- nobody likes to really help anybody unless it is friends or family (I live in the midwest so that is pretty common)
- My uncle's Honda stalls so I have to push it out of the freeway often.
- No matter where you live there are always slums, gangster kids, poor people.
- Also there is somewhat of a mini revolution going on here.

Honestly I dont think I could work here knowing that if I wear a nice suit people are envious and in return turn that into hatred. (Happened too)

Even if I can have my own Merc and driver there at 21. I dont want to die.

Sorry now I am not going to stop this hate fest.

Walkio:
^ haha. Mumbai is a cool city man, you just need to experience it like a local. But to be perfectly honest, Delhi is much better! Cleaner, safer and a lot more to do.

Delhi has more to do than Mumbai? Please. Delhi is boring as shit. It has the metro though, which is awesome.

Also, OP stop being such a bitch. Those Mumbai "gangsters" are a bunch of little pussies who watch too many movies. Throw one punch and they'll shit their pants.

yea i guess i was wearing a pollo shirt and i got like 10 stares thinking that i think i am some big shot. You have to blend in. Also the only hot girls are the actresses. Also I told my family about my gf in the states and they were like wtf you are dating a white girl. Haha I guess I stick out like a sore thumb here even though I am brown......... People here are like racist to NRI's haha

I want a lady on the street, but a freak in the bed, Go Bucks!!

To be honest dude, you should just go with an open mind. When I went, I had no issue. But then again Delhi and its surrounding areas are a lot wealthier and poverty isn't so much of an issue as it is in Mumbai.

Haha, went through this same experience a few months back. They still haven't come around yet, but I'm giving it time. I agree with the previous poster also, Delhi >>> Mumbai. You're still going to find slums, but the area is much safer all in all, and people seem to be a lot friendlier, especially to Westerners.

have the little beggar-children started to target your family yet? in that part of the world, it seems like everyone from the merchants, to the beggars, to the mosquitoes are able to tell immediately that you're not a local.

True story: My family and I were in Agra checking out the Taj Mahal a few years back. Dad thought it would be neat to pick up a replica of the Taj Mahal as a souvenir, something like a 1 foot by 1 foot model of the building. Somehow, word on the street got out, and my family and I were swamped by 15+ vendors in a circle trying to sell us a replica. Keep in mind that these weren't poor kids begging for money, these were shop owners yelling out things like "1,500 rupees for a model!"..."No!, Come to my shop, I'll give you a better price" etc.

Moral of the story. Never make it known that you are looking to purchase something in India, haha.

I like Mumbai especially during the Winter when its so cold in NY. The weather is really nice and its warm and tropical. I think you just had bad experience there and some things that you are saying are universal to the world, like people only helping friends and family. But yea, I mean its India so you see begars and poor people all around. Its completly uncommon in U.S since America's so rich and powerful, but I mean this gives you a glimpse into what the world is like outside of U.S/Europe and the rich/developed nations. Overall, I like Mumbai the most out of all places in India.

Umm.. Well you had a poor experience, why tell the whole world about it? Honestly, the whole world knows about Indian poverty and mumbai slums, if you were expecting villas perhaps California or the south of France would have been better options. Yes, I am very touchy about people talking rubbish about my country.

P.S- what the hell are gangster kids? I have lived in Mumbai for a while and I never came across these kind of kids.

^ Ambition just sounds like he's going through a bit of an identity crisis. Happens to quite a lot of East Indian immigrants.

Something I've observed lately: students at targets, and top schools in general (Ivy + Stanford, MIT, Duke, UChicago etc.), are much more open to the idea of working in India and, if they're South Asian, are much more comfortable with, and more proud of, their culture. All the non-target immigrant kids I know though, can't stop bashing their culture and just basically try to assimilate as best they can, while completely failing to do so because of the identity crisis they're going through. I know this sounds pretty crazy but I've met enough people now that have confirmed this observation. I have a feeling that it might have to do with the environments at top schools being more open to diversity compared to so-so schools, but that's something I'm not sure about haha.

A tip: Try to hang-out at more upscale places, i.e. country clubs, etc., and you wont have to deal with the "gangster kids" or the "poor/slum people". lol. But, please, have an open mind about this. No country in the world is exactly the same as another one. I'll bet that A LOT of places in the U.S. are way more rundown than most Indian cities.

I see where you're coming from. But I think its more acceptance then anything else. Generally, there are people who feel the need to disparage their culture/nationality/religion depending on their company. I know people on both sides. They're pretty easy to spot.

Usually those school groups don't mean shit. Just an excuse to get laid. This is true even at top schools.

Like unknown4ever said, those groups are just an excuse to get laid. I know several people who visit India every other month, eat Indian food every day, and only date other Indians (so basically the hardcore Indians) who refuse to be a part of these 'cultural' groups. Most of these students claim that these cultural groups require too much of a time commitment, lead to too much drama, and force you to organize and sit through boring and slightly torturous 'cultural' events. These people would much rather go home for Diwali with a few of their friends than organize a cultural party on campus for the occasion, for instance. Generally, you'll find that the Indians who join the cultural groups only do so because they're willing to deal with the nonsense as long as it increases their chances of getting lucky. :)

-_-:
that doesnt mean that those people aren't in touch with their culture. most indians who hate their culture wouldnt even pretend to be part of it.

^ Most Indians who hate their culture are precisely the type I've described in my last post. They're confused, and are basically going through an identity crisis. They want to 'assimilate' but can't quite because they still feel that connection to their culture. Generally, you'll find more of these types at non-targets than at targets. Just visit Duke and UNC, and you'll see for yourself. And, if you're interested in seeing the same phenomenon on an international level, visit a Oxford or LSE and a Nottingham/Edinburgh.

Mumbai was pretty chill IMO. I dunno why people are saying it's more dangerous than Delhi (everything and everyone I've heard from says it's the complete opposite just because Mumbai is always crowded) but aside from the traffic and sky high prices for crap quality real estate, it's a decent place that's growing quickly and probably will be a financial hub globally in 10-15 years. I would love to work there personally.

Haha, pretty sure there were a bunch of idiots deriding HK 10 years ago. This thread is making me more confident now than ever that Mumbai will indeed become a global financial center!

@OP Why does your uncle drive a broken down Honda if you are such a baller from the Mid West?

@Others Why don't you take a nice walk in Bronx or Harlem after 11 PM and come write a post about it here.

My question to the OP is - how 'Indian' are you? What's your accent? Do you speak an Indian language - say Hindi? Seeing as you have a White girlfriend (props for that), I'm guessing you were born and raised in the States and are pretty 'American'? I don't want to make a judgment before I know that, but it just seems that you know very little about India and are judging a book completely by its cover.

There are a shitload of poor people in India - it is the saddest reality of a great country. I am a Delhite and I much prefer it over Bombay but Bombay is a great, great city, and the future of India. If you can't handle poverty, dirt, and sweating it out, then definitely don't come to India.

bbjhva:
you have a White girlfriend (props for that)

I'm sorry but this just cracked me up lol.

Carry on.

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis, you can't trust people Jeremy

I speak Hindi and Sindhi, I have been born and raised in the US. Also my dad told me that my grandparents live in a Fisherman's part which is prolly one of the worst. Where you guys think the best parts of mumbai are? My mom's side parents live in a place called Breach Candy ( I think that is what it is called), and it was great. I guess all I had was a cultural shock. I agree with you guys to keep an open mind, the Sea Link was amazing too....... I just didn't see the correct parts of mumbai. Haha 1 day in the town ( south Mumbai) really somewhat changed my perception.

This is my first time seeing it so I honestly was not sure what to expect. It just takes a few days to get used to.

I LOVE AUTOS!!! So fun to ride in haha. Lots of NRi's and such live in Breach Candy.

I want a lady on the street, but a freak in the bed, Go Bucks!!

^ telling it like it is, Jorgé haha. If you've seen Undercover Brother and remember Dave Chappelle's reaction to the undercover brother hooking up with a white chick, just replace Chappelle with every Indian guy ever.

Ambition - Breach Candy is high end, in fact pretty much all of south bombay is. Around the airport, in places like Parel or outskirts of Andheri yes there is a bitchload of pretty saddening poverty. That's India for you. This doesn't mean that you should just stay in a shell in south bombay - I know people who do that and they happen to be the most spoiled and useless people I know. What you have to do is embrace India, embrace bombay, and live it up like a true Indian rather than an NRI struggling to come to terms with the 'culture shock'. Don't mean to sound harsh at all btw, just honest I guess.

Also if you speak Hindi, make sure its all you speak when in India...will get you street cred in case you look like a 'foreign item'.

bbjhva:

bbjhva, not to pick on you or anything bro, but how does someone from the Midwest who has never been to India act like a "true Indian"? i see your point and fully agree that blending in as much as possible will enrich your cultural experience abroad, and admit that a PIO has the advantage of some exposure to Indian language/culture over other Americans. however, at the end of the day OP (forgive me for speaking for you) is an American travelling abroad. culture shock is inevitable.

on a side note (not referring to your post bbjhva), calling "identity crisis" because PIO's raised in other countries act differently from Indians who were raised in India is just ludicrous. i have no resentment towards Indian immigrants, but i see a disturbing pattern among them where they expect ethnic Indians to behave a certain way regardless of their upbringing. as if people are genetically inclined to love Bollywood or Database Theory or some shit...

Money Never Sleeps? More like Money Never SUCKS amirite?!?!?!?

Sayandarula - fair enough, was just giving my views on how best to make the most of bbay. A lot of people make the mistake of judging India by its cover, and I felt the OP did that, too...despite being Indian himself haha. No harm done. I'm anyway surprised I'm defending bbay...I'm a full on delhi supporter...as others have said, just a lot nicer, cleaner and more developed than bbay. Safer? Not really, especially for girls.

Stop being a little girl. India must be pretty cool (I'm Paki). Karachi is very similar to Mumbai and I can tell you that you need to adapt or get the fuck out. I felt like if you're able to fit in and enjoy the shit south asians enjoy then you will have no problem. I think south asia in general is an epic experience especially for South Asian Americans.

When I went to Karachi, I was roaming the streets and riding the rickshaws and buses. The street food is AMAZING. You gotta enjoy it man, can't let the poverty or the third world feel get to you. You should've known that you were going to a country with poverty. I've never been to Mumbai, but if I was offered an IB position there I would definitely take it.

Enjoy your stay bro, you're in Bollywood.

From what I have heard of people who have visited both, it seems like Karachi and Mumbai are indeed very similar. They tell me the primary difference is that Mumbai seems to have a lot more extreme wealth aka India's economic burgouise and financially it is much bigger player in Karachi because of its global importance. I have heard there are less slums in Karachi and the food is a bit better there. Another thing they told me is that Mumbai seems to be a lot more progressive and many rich people of mumbai are more whitewashed than Indian-Americans

welcome to new york city. or any city for that matter.

Yea I can see you point, but for example I was driving a car here now and somebody yelled at me for not honking... I mean that is like a insult where I live if you honk but here its a every second part of driving, so the people just know you there........which actually makes more sense to me.... I have to say that people here who drive are pro haha... the clubs and drank here are nice, also some of them spoiled rich girls are fine ( the ones I met at this random club) She is a fashion designer so she showed me nice clubs in Band Stand at B.C.

I have to see the work culture here the schooling is sooo competitive, the work has got to be worse. haha

I have been born and bred in India but did my schooling in US. I suggest you that learn about the culture, talk to people who seem nice, attend festivals, ride a rickshaw, eat street food. Once you really start understanding how things work wrt the historical context you will start appreciating the culture. Poverty is a problem but you can just ignore the beggars if they approach you. Also remember some of the lower middle class and middle class people are actually very nice and helpful.

Learning a new culture wrt its history will only expand your thought process and mind and India has a very rich culture with some exceptions.

Also there are many nice places near Mumbai like Goa, Mysore, Bangalore, Mangalore, Gokarna try visiting them.

Its all well and good for everyone to reiterate learning about the culture, etc but an experience like the one OP mentioned tends to sour one that no matter what they learn or try to appreciate it, you have that negative perception lodged in your mind.

Unrelated, but its the same with me and those hooded teenagers in London after the recent riots. Some may just like to dress like that and are from a good family and work hard, but am I going to want to discover more about that? No.

Dude you are comparing all the people of India to people involved in riots. People wearing hoodies is very small sample size so your argument may be justified. But there are 1.2 Billion people in India, the sample size is too large to relate with few experiences . Every place in the world you are good to find the cool crowd and the looser crowd. I understand your reservation, but if OP finds 2-3 good educated Indian friends they will teach him how to enjoy India and tricks to deal with poor people.

Because there are so many poor people in India, you can hire a 24 hr worker for $100-$150 a month, who would make food for you, do your laundry , clean your house etc. That makes life very comfortable when you can just focus on your work and party and all other errands can be run by some one else for real cheap.
