Murray Hill vs East Village

Moving to NYC in a couple of months. First job out of college situation. Office is near Grand Central. Should I go East Village or Murray Hill?

I will be living with two other guys. When I interned, I lived in EV and really liked it. I could walk to work then and most of the bars I went to were around there (don’t have a lot of experience in Murray Hill area). It was a win-win.

Office is now near GC, so I could potentially walk to work from Murray Hill. Which one do you guys prefer? Which one is considered nicer/better neighborhood?

Happy to address any questions. Thanks!

I understand your description of Murray Hill. It is similar to what I have heard before: Has the 'Bro' vibe and very college/post-college feel, which I don't mind. I had a good time in college haha and I'm still young.

I don't quite understand what you mean by "influencer / college life". Are you saying it has more of a college feel than Murray Hill? Care to elaborate what you mean?

Haha yes I'm sorry. This is has been my own experience living in the city, but I'd say generally East Village is a bit more of a younger crowd in comparison to Murray Hill. I'd say it's fair to see people around the age of 20 in East Village, while in Murray Hill let's say the general age is 25. I'll also add that a lot of parties get thrown in east village (obviously this prob wont really happen for another year at least), and if you still want to party the East Village has that vibe. Hope that clarifies it

East Village is more fun. Not sure what is open and closed now though.

I live in Murray Hill and have lots of friends in East Village so am down there a lot. My office and gym are also in midtown so you really cant beat walking to work. Especially for the next year, do you really want to take a subway crowded with people every morning?

i think the food and bars available near east village is better, but Murray Hill has a bunch of go-to spots that are pretty decent. East village is also closer to some parks. Regardless, EV is only like 15 blocks away from MH, so you can walk there in 15-20 mins if you ever want to try out a place.

I really like Murray Hill, but East Village is great too. If you dont mind taking subway to work East Village might be slightly better (personally).

The one pro of Murray Hill is that you are a 20-minute cab ride from everywhere in the city.

I like the bars in Murray Hill, BJs, Duke's, Rio Grande, Waterfront Ale House, Albion(Old Whisky River), you are super near K-town which has amazing spots.  You are also close to gramercy.  I was older when I lived there, EV might be better.  BUT, that's the thing about the city...you don't just go out in one neighborhood.

Murray Hill has much better apartment quality than East Village and is cheaper too. East village is awesome to party in, but living there is another story. It's filled with garbage, rats, cockroaches, and is noisy. Many apartments there are small, filled with rodents, and expensive. After a few months you might get tired of seeing rodents everywhere, or hearing blonds screaming and chugging whiteclaws at 3am while you're trying to get some sleep in your 4th floor walk up apartment.

You have to make the choice between boring + amazing quality and affordable apartment in Murray Hill, or super fun + shitty apartment in East Village unless you're willing to pay some dough for a decent apartment.
