also interested, the only new band I've listened to in the past several years has been black keys
I always heard about the Black Keys and never paid any attention to them but then I saw them play when I saw a taping of The Colbert Report and they were actually better than I thought!
I'm also fairly out of touch with the new music scene. I was at a pub the other day and it was playing all newer ish music and I was using Shazam for just about every song that came on.
Even stuff that I consider new like Imagine Dragons... is from 2012...
Driving down the freeway in the middle of the night listening to the Black Keys is a wonderful experience my friend.
If you like the Black Keys then you'll like Arctic Monkeys. Very popular, but for a good reason. They've been coming out with consistently good shit for the last 15 years.
justin bieber and one direction
garth brooks
nickelback
Don't forget Taylor Swift!
To be honest I am impressed that someone who is almost 70 yrs old would like to keep in touch with modern music.
Kanye West is decent, I would recommend listening to My Dark Twisted Fantasy Album,Arcade Fire - The Suburbs album, Big Black - Songs About fucking, Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend, The band Swans whole discography,Nomeansno - Wrong album. The albums I recommended are pretty mainstream and have really good reviews. I think it would be pretty fucking rad to see an ex-banker listen to punk music.
Kanye West is the only hip-hop artist I added but I would recommend Danny Brown and Busdriver - both are really appreciated and lyrically creative.
EDIT: I would recommend creating a last.fm account, last.fm looks into your favorite artists and offers suggestions about other artists depending on your taste.
Kanye may be a bit avant garde for someone who likely hasn't listened to rap before (i.e. former BB CEOs), but I agree that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was incredible. I think Atmosphere would be a very good way to branch into hip hop - When Life Gives you Lemons, Paint that Shit Gold is a fantastic album and a very easy listen.
I marginally prefer Funeral over The Suburbs, but bother are incredible. I do love Bon Iver, though its a shame they only made two albums before hanging em up.
Fuck yes, Atmosphere is amazing. Doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves.
If you like some mellow indie-ish stuff: Phosphorescent and Horse Feathers.
Bon Iver? I didn't hear about that?
But anyway, I hope you pronounce their name with a french accent. ;)
I'm impressed with your eclectic list of music... that Dark Twisted Fantasy Album is amazing. Kanye may be an awful celeb but that album is brilliant from the production to lyrical content.
@"DickFuld" just remembered you went to Boulder in the 60s, you probably like heady shit

Migos
Came here to post Migos and got beat to it. Damnit.
I think Spotify is way better than iTunes. They have so many different playlists (current top 100, what's trending in the US, Europe, etc), and you can also take a song you like and turn that into a radio station (it'll generate songs similar to your initial pick). Although all of the music is streamed, you can download your playlists to your device to play offline and you can follow other people/their playlists. You can get it for free, but the premium (no ads every 30 minutes) is $10 a month. You can also just make an account on Spotify to look at all of their lists (which are generally pretty accurate of what's currently popular) and get the songs on iTunes if that's more your thing.
Anyway, what's mainstream popular right now is: Taylor Swift (she actually elected to take her music off Spotify because she wants more money), Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, etc.
Hope that was somewhat helpful.
Mastodon. Porcupine Tree. Candlemass. Orchid. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Agalloch. Orphaned Land. Dark Tranquillity. Fates Warning. Dream Theater.
@DickFuld Your fandom will surely elevate these bands....choose wisely!
ah, we're going there?! I can recommend metal all day, not on your level, but still.
Fuck yeah, we're going there.
Going to have to add: Opeth, Electric Wizard, Tool, and this entire thread here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/any-metalheads-on-wso
I think @DickFuld could spend his whole bonus acquiring music from every band in that thread!

Deadmau5, Avicii, David Guetta
It's what the kids listen to so it must be good! They are so talented, the way they stand up on stage and press buttons
Avicii and David Guetta are average but Joel Zimmerman (deadmau5) puts a ton of work into his music...a lot more than most artists.
Doctor Smoke
Definitely recommend Spotify over Itunes.
IMO you can't go wrong with Godsmack, Flyleaf, Rage Against the Machine, Buckcherry, Nickleback, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Rascal Flatts, or Elmore James
You are the whitest person on the entire planet
I thought the list was okay but then Nickelback threw me off.
OP I'm in a 60s era jazz phase right now so can't help you much.
Sounds like Spotify is the way to go, I use Pandora but hadn't seen it mentioned yet and I trust WSO more than myself on those things
My recently played artists from Spotify:
But as for a band suggestion, I would check out the Twerps. A local band, they play jangly indie rock (Think the Go-Betweens). Well worth a listen.
Did multiple people write down Nickelback? I just sampled a few songs, biggest pile of homogenized shit I've heard in a long time.
You guys are going to need to try harder than that.
Nickelback is notoriously shitty, but somehow extremely popular. It's a running joke among millennials. Everyone who is says Nickelback on this post is trolling.
Or someone sincerely wrote down Nickelback on this post, in which case they should be shamed to no extent.
Hozier - 'Take me to Church'
Has anybody heard that? That's kind of what I'm looking for. Whoever said music died in the early eighties was wrong, based on that. First purchase on iTunes!
Try black keys, alt j, queens of the stone age, cold war kids, kasabian. Warpaint is good too (if you don't hate women)
check out Passenger. He has some great songs that I recently discovered. Whispers and All the Little Lights albums of his are the best.
Check out James Blake he's similar to that Hozier dude. Try out Arctic Monkeys. Wish I could +1 for the Black Keys recommendation. I'd just fuck around on pandora, spotify or some shit like that to find similar artists.
What do you like about that song? Songs across different genres and different styles you might take interest in:

CoCo? This isn't the hood--this is WSO, the furthest thing from it. There is also a new music video for CoCo that is produced by Busta Rhymes (I think).
Other good ones I found:
"Say Somethting" -- A Great Big World
"Low" -- Flo Rida (feat. T-Pain)
"Wasted" -- Tiesto
"Stay" -- Rihanna (feat. Mikky Ekko)
"Sail" - AWOLNATION
Everything I've heard so far from the Black Keys and White Stripes.
Thanks guys.
I don't really listen to much music in specific, mainly just Pandora. The playlists that I tend to use are :
Motion City Soundtrack MC Chris Die Antwoord The Beatles Mac Miller
And then the last record I bought was The Violent Femmes. I strongly recommend any one that likes music of any kind to pick up that album. It's that good.
Arctic Monkeys - AM is a good album.
Arctic Monkeys - AM is a good album.
Few random suggestions from modern mainstream stuff:
"Counting Stars" by OneRepublic:

"Maps" by Maroon 5:

"Safe and Sound" by Capital Cities:

I don't know why no one has mentioned this yet, but anything by "The Lonely Island" is good. And by good, I mean amazing.
My latest and greatest list of stuff I've been listening to:
Wilco (catch them live if you can, it'll change your life) The Avett Brothers Of Monsters and Men 90's hip hop (NAS, Mos Def, Tribe Called Quest, etc.) Grouplove - Fucking great Walk The Moon - Not the new album, it kind of sucks Various Blues Artists (if you guys like the Black Keys, which I do, listen to Junior Kimbrough, their inspiration) Early Robert Palmer Various Jazz Fusion artists like The Weather Report, Steely Dan, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Jeff Beck...) Paul Simon's Graceland with my kids in the car - they love it (along with their favorites - The Who, The Ramones, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Also, I made a New Year's resolution to listen to all 500 of Rolling Stone's top 500 albums of all time this year from 500 to 1. I'm on number 474. Some of them are difficult to get through, others are fantastic. Spotify on desktop is great for this since you can pick any album that they have and listen from start to finish without paying a dime.
Atmosphere Kendrick Lamar Passenger Oasis CCR James Taylor Steve Miller Band Kygo Chance the Rapper Coldplay Faul Boston
I strictly play fire through my headphones.
Also, Dick, a suggestion. Instead of using iTunes, use services like Spotify or Soundcloud, which are either free or subscription based and have all the same music as iTunes, and as I mentioned they are either cheaper or completely free.

I'll second the Chance the Rapper, Wilco and Raconteur recommendations. Highly recommend soundcloud for electronic music. I'll also add Foster the People, Milky Chance and My Morning Jacket to the list of bands.

By the way, if any of you are looking for a good festival, Shaky Knees Festival May 8-10 in Atlanta has a killer lineup... The Strokes, Avett Brothers, Wilco, The Pixies, Ryan Adams, Mastodon, Neutral Milk Hotel, TV on the Radio, James Blake, Interpol, Manchester Orchestra, Flogging Molly, Milky Chance, The Kooks, Minus the Bear, The Mowglis, Mac Demarco, Old Crow Medicine Show, and tons more.
just get spotify radio on your phone .... you hear great songs and new ones as well. The best part is that you never have to "build" you music library anymore.. it all there, refreshed and updated for you automatically..
Blink-182, Front Porch Step, The City Shakeup, 21 Pilots
This has to be the most odd couple collection of music suggestions I have ever seen.
The Coachella Valley music festival is way better, if you don't mind the terrible weather and sweaty men without t-shirts. The Irish Tenors Concert is also great...
