My chances at top MSF programs?
Currently finished my 3rd year in №1 ranked University in my country (Russia) with major in math. Got 2 more years to go.
TOEFL:112/120
GMAT: Planning to take in 1 month. Currently scoring around 700 on mock tests (quant around 48-50, Verbal around 38-40), but hope to improve and score close to 750 on actual test
GPA: 3.7/5 . VERY Low, but probably could get improved to something like 4.3/5 during my 5th year of study.
Work Experience:
1)1 year in large system integrator dealing with business processes for Largest banks for Oracle CRM system
2) Currently interning in Big 4 financial services consulting also dealing with largest banks
3) Planning on taking SA next summer in Russian or BB Banks.(In Russia our local boutiques are bigger than BB's)
Extracurricular: Here nothing for now, but probably will try to pass CFA lvl 1 and become a member of student-managed fund while participating in mathematical finance program.
So what are my chances of getting to top MSF programs in US with my current background?
And what programs would you recommend?
And probably there are some steps that should be taken that I missed
Thanks in advance.
Why do you want to do a MSF in the US?
"And what programs would you recommend?" Well, that's on you buddy. You have to figure out if you want to do quant heavy programs or not. But I am not going to do that google search for you. You need to show some initiative.
How does your GPA translate into the US system?
Try to add 1-2 GOOD ECs.
How did you get a 112 in the TOEFL. It makes me a little sad.
Also, didn't you post something similar a while ago?
Despite being a math major I don't want to do quant heavy programs. Ofc i did some research myself and MIT Mfin came out to be my possible №1 choice. But it is very competitive, so after MIT come WUSTL, Vanderbilt, Villanova, Claremont McKenna. I am also thinking about considering management programs like Duke MMS.
GPA probably translates Something like 3.7/5=0,74 and then 0,74*4=2,96/4 . Think somethink like this
TOEFL:For me it was 2 month with approx 2-3 hours per week with a teacher to get to this score. But when I started preparation I already had very good english. I am much more worried about GMAT since it is way harder than TOEFL.(already spent twice more time than on toefl and planning to study for 1 more month)
And yes-I posted similar topic couple weeks ago, but got no response, that's why I decided to try once more.
Writing skills не очень соответствуют 112 TOEFL.
MFin Princeton or MIT - you can try, but the chances are very low with your GPA. If financing your tuition is not an issue, you can also take a look at the financial economics degree in Columbia U.
What do you intend to do after you graduate?Stay in US (in which field?) or go back to Russia?
I'd say MIT is going to be a longer shot. WUSTL is a good option. Claremont might be within range if you get your GMAT higher. All the other schools will be possible as long as your package is put together well.
I'd focus on figuring out what you plan on doing with this MSF. Having a plan is what separates people who succeed from MSF programs with ones who do not.
Man, TOEFL must have become a joke.
Honestly, you did a bad job at researching. From what I have gathered, MIT's Mfin is one of the most quant heavy programs that currently exist.
First of all, calculating your GPA like you did (3.7/5=0,74 and then 0,74*4=2,96/4) is just plain away stupid. You are in Russia and it may or may not be harder to get a 5 in Russia than an A in the US. You have to look into some service like WES which converts your grades.
You have been studying for the GMAT for 4 months already?
I also don't think a lot of schools in the US know that "Russia['s] ... local boutiques are bigger than BB's"
I found info, that MIT Mfin can be done with just 1 or 2 heavy quant courses.
GPA calculation in this way is 100% wrong, but when calculated right it won't be much higher or lower. Probably +- 0.1-0.2
No-3 weeks for GMAT for now. But instead of 3 hours for TOEFL it is 10+ for GMAT
Я не очень внимательно писал пост, но грубых ошибок не заметил=)
Financial economics degree in columbia has around 2% acceptance rate, average GMAT of 740+ and less than 10 people in class. So i thought it will be out of reach.
I plan to stay and work in the US. But not totally sure in which field for now. By the time i graduate from my current university i will 100% figure that out.
You didn't? Again, you might want to work a little more on your English (especially for essays, etc.)
Any chance you can do a semester or summer in England or Ireland?
It will greatly improve your English.
Got 740 on my GMAT. Does it really offset bad GPA?
Just out of curiosity: What was your breakdown between Quant/Verbal?
