My School Fucking Sucks

I never realized how fucking shitty my school was until I started looking into career paths like banking, consulting, or even F500 corporate leadership. Nobody mentioned any of these careers to me at my school.

Holy shit. Only 1 person in IB, and its MM gas and oil. 2 people in consulting, and they are both government at big 4.

I tried looking at corporate finance. C'mon now we gotta be okay here? Everyone and their mother is a "finance manager" in fucking sox compliance after like 15-20 years in their career. All the actual FLDP's are taken from kids in the larger state school a couple hours away. Everyone at my school ends up in some off brand recruiting or sales for a hay company.

The only CEO's I found were a couple small regional companies at best, but most of them are just freelancers on Upwork with founder and CEO slapped on their LinkedIn

This isnt a tiny school either. About 14,000 annual enrollment and id say a third are business majors. Its a state school and its pretty damn cheap (around $9k a year), so I guess you get what you paid for.

I didn't know about any of these amazing careers till the beginning of my junior year. And the only thing i was told by people at my school was that it was impossible until I have grey hair and years of experience. Fuck that.

I've been networking and hustling, and i will make something happen. Im one of the top in my class and have founded a large club. Even got a big 4 internship (in fucking risk advisory) but its a start.

Im not here for your pity. But frankly im just pissed off after seeing all the good jobs go to kids from the other school thats slightly more selective. I know these companies and banks are knocking on their door, and im trying to jump over the fence just to get a chance to have my resume glanced at. If i had known anything about business i would have gone there. I was just some 18 year old who was focused on sports and getting laid. Had decent grades, but figured any education was the same from my blue collar upbringing.

Rant over. I'm ready for the onslaught of MS and people calling me a bitch. Just wanted to vent out my anger to a bunch of fellow autists who understand my pain. Any of you face a similar situation and make it out?

Your school is relevant for your career start, it becomes less relevant the more experience and years you have under your belt. Do your best to land the right internships and jobs and use your network/referrals to land the next gig. Or: go back to college for an MBA later and do a brand name school if your efforts previously didn't work out.

You know online applications that make you select your university from a dropdown list? I had to select "Other" because my university is so unknown it wasn't even an option.

Not the end of the world though. Basically every person I went to school with that was sharp still "made it" to some degree. The reality is you will not get the same looks at the front end of your career but over time it matters significantly less. A university is a signal to employers but it can be overcome with individual qualities. I'd say the shared qualities of those that "made it" are:

-Strong communication skills without disempowering undertones (They felt like they belonged in the room. Shake off this "shitty school" mentality ASAP).
-Confident in their abilities and worked hard on projects until fruition.
-Socially capable such that they didn't rub people the wrong way. Not that you loved them, but that they didn't make you dislike them.
-Created work product that inspired confidence in their abilities. You knew if they were given the tools they would deliver on the task. And if you didn't give them the tools, they would let you know.

Being on the other end, having a positive attitude and being able to sell myself were critical. Just my morning thoughts.

Just had my trade dispute rejected by Schwab for a loss of 35k. This single issue alone should be a gigantic red flag to anyone who trades on their platform. If they have a system error, and you do not video record your trading (they actually said this), they will not honour their fuck up. Switching everything away from them. Fuck this company.
