Navigating an internal move (one industry group to another)

Hi

A few months ago I lateraled from a no name boutique to an EB. At my previous boutique I was in one of the specialised sectors (Real Estate, FIG for example). To make the move to an EB I realised I would have to stay in this sector initially.

Now I am at the EB, I am clearer that I do not want to stay in this industry, compounded by the fact that my new team is not one of the stronger ones at the EB.

My question is - how do I make a move to another group happen? After how long would it be deemed to be acceptable to approach other teams? How should I make contact with them? Should I raise this with my current team at an early stage, or wait till my discussions are more advanced?

I was thinking of reaching out to a staffer or two in teams I am interested in, but I am conscious of this getting back to my current team and creating a negative impression

Thanks!

Tough to say without knowing your reputation and how long you’ve been with team / level. Typical fact pattern is after a couple years and having solid reputation you can make a move. For you, think it would be easier to wait and see if a need appears on team you want to go to and raise your hand then vs try to proactively create a spot.
