Need advice - Portfolio Sales vs Structured Volatility Sales
I really like both of these desks, so I need some advice as to the pros and cons of each. I would appreciate input from those who are in the industry. Undergrads need not reply. Jimbo, thoughts?
on either of these desks, you will make $0 cash, so id avoid em both
best of luck
i am not familiar with these roles, pls describe them.
Portfolio sales is within the equities division and focuses on selling in-house research and equity syndicate.
Structured vol sales is within equity derivatives, but uses a mix of both equity and fixed income components.
i'd go for the second...hybrid desks are usually considered a fixed income product though.
yeah, i was under the same impression... but although they are a hybrid, they are situated on the equities floor...
could you maybe elaborate a little as to why you would go for the latter choice?
thanks
i find structured stuff more interesting than research sales. more cerebral.
i'm surprised it's with equities...the equity guys usually can't model the rate aspect of the product.
True,
Are those products for retail clients or qualified investors?
Retail investors can be qualified too randomwalk...:-)
there are actually two sides of the business: one for institutional and one for the private investment side.
that's good, you'll get to see different things,
i was asked a while ago to help some equity guys hedge a position they had using FI products. The way the strategy was designed, it was more natural (and actually gave better results) if you used a weighted average of something. Advice from my supervisor: "forget it and use simple average instead; equity guys are really simple"
