Negatives of working at a family office? Pros?

Curious if anyone's had or heard of significantly negative experience working for a family office.
Think 50-200mm in size, small team, mix of LP and direct PE-type investing.

Could you exit to the 'institutional' side if necessary?

Cons:

  1. Very political, can be tough to be promoted 
  2. Lower comp 
  3. Families may have varying degrees of input on investment decisions

Can second this. Lots of responsibility, access and interesting work, but in the end your Progress is decided by your BO. They decide your focus, your salary,... and that is often not only numbers driven. Have seen people get fired on a whim (after headhunting them to join) because BO changed his mind on focus of the FO. Getting fired like that (even if unrelated to your performance) by sb with notable fame in his/her industry doesn't look great. Make sure to vet who you will be working for and what you're getting into.
