NERA Economic Consulting - Internships/Exit Opportunity?
Can someone please provide insights on NERA Economic Consulting. Specifically their Antitrust and IP department.
What % of summer interns get full-time return offers at NERA? What do the exit opportunities look like? Is it common for employees to enter management/strategy consulting later in the Big 3s or the Big 4s?
How does the compensation/job security compare to Equity Research jobs?
Can't speak for NERA specifically, but:
1. Exits are usually to competitors, some government, data analytics / science / S&O at big tech, some finance, all kinds of grad school. Seen a lot of people do an EC internship and switch to MC for full-time. EC full-time -> MC is rare without an MBA.
2. Salary / bonus is definitely lower than ER but less hours - most analysts average ~45-50 / wk. Antitrust is known for longer hours but you get a higher bonus. EC doesn't have anything like Mifid to threaten job security. However, at the big EC firms you'll need an advanced degree to move up past a certain point.
Previously worked in EC and just to echo the comments above, the advanced degree needed is almost always an Econ PhD. Not much MBA or other grad program hiring. It's a good gig that'll give you technical skills and set up you nicely to apply for an MBA where you can make the transition. It's not a bad job but that's a long path to end up in a strategy role.
I've seen that it depends on the firm. Analysis Group for example hires quite a few MBAs, even those without EC experience. People at some firms work out of undergrad, get their MBA, and come back. At my firm some people have made it to higher positions with just a masters, including a few at the VP / MD level.
Definitely not as common or easy of a path as a PhD, but still very possible.
Thanks for the input.
