We see it, say it, and hear it everyday: networking. I think we all have some understanding of what that means, but the sd is so great that is may be good to learn something about it... at least it is/was for me.
I read Keith Ferrazzi's "Never Eat Alone last year"... it's great and I highly recommend it, but I think the book that is most appropriate for the collective 'job searching/changing monkeys' us is "Highly Effective Networking." I posit that even if you currently have a large, active and accessible network, you stand to learn something from this book.
I'm currently transitioning from the military, accepted into an MBA program and looking for a part-time internship. I know a total of one person working in Finance/wall street. So for me, expanding my network your way has been vital... on any note, it's working... don't have the internship or the job yet, but I'm making contacts so I wanted to pass along my two cents that I think the book could be useful...
Some general takeaways:
-In person, phone, email (in that order)
-Get someone to introduce you even if they are 3 degrees away (I'm having success with this... kind of amazing).
-Most people get jobs before they are listed... if you are applying through the notice, you're behind the curve
-It's not always best to go straight to the 'Decision Maker' (read MD)...you may want to start by collecting information from insiders at or below your own level.
-Networking is about talking... it is not asking for anything (even small things)... make the person you are talking with comfortable.
-Ask to be introduced only if your shared connections feels you'll get along great.
-Don't lose contact... tap them every month
-Make it a two way street... help them with something useful to them.
Anyway, book is worth the read... thought I'd pass that on.

Rec's for some networking books besides the WSO Guide. Probably a little bit of negotiation -structuring e-mails and calls so people respond. Phrasing sentences so people say yes...
Maybe there's a marketing or pwm book out there that covers this.....
And no, don't tell me to read "Getting to yes," that book is more centered towards making deals and bargaining.
