A networking dream-list!
hi everyone! I have just registered on WSO, but I've been lurking around for a while...
I have a question for all of you monkeys out there. I'll be soon graduating, and I am starting to look for a job in banking
At the moment, I am interning in a company that organizes networking events for executives, and I happen to be working with a huge database of people attending the next conference.
These people are MDs, Partners, country managers, and there's also a couple of CEOs. The database includes their contact information: phone, emails, etc...
My question is: is there any way I can leverage this dream-list? Since my internship will be over by the time the conference is on, I won't be able to attend it and network with these executives in person, but Id like to grasp the opportunity.
Cold-emailing just feels wrong, in addition to that, what could I actually say? "Dear sir, I found this email address on my desktop - resume is attached" ?
I'm open to any comment /suggestion!
will
can you send me the list please?
And me too?
Could you send me the list as well?
Hmmm...could I have the list? How much do you want for a copy?
lol. no but seriously
What imnotheonlyone said.
Ask to still attend after your internship is done. If they liked you at all I'm sure they wouldn't mind you going. Never hurts to ask.
Don't do it. Finally someone is smart enough to get an internship at YPO rather than all the simplistic "I interned at a BB this summer." Were you at the W two weeks ago? Maybe we met.
hey.....could you send me the list as well ?
Definitely do not use that list. You are privy to private information and it will look very bad on your previous firm. Simply ask to attend, volunteer your time to help out at the event itself and do your own networking there.
Did you get to meet anyone or attend other events during your internship?
Hi guys, thanks for the inputs! @Victoria and leveRAGE: that's exactly what I was thinking of doing, but unfortunately I won't be in the country by the time the event takes place... I didn't get to meet anyone during my internship, but my boss said openly: "Those are all people who could get you a job!" Maybe I should ask HIM to hand out my CV during the event!
Privacy is also the reason why I'm not gonna give out any details about the location (@MrDouche: it wasn't YPO :))
Is there an auction for the list?
Will gordon, you screwed up by writing one of the worst titles on a job search board. What did you expect people were going to do, lol.

I have made a lot of solid contacts throughout the networking process for a Summer Analyst at a BB position. I would hate to lose those contacts come full time recruiting. Does anyone know of a networking website where you can keep contact information or correspondence history with different people?
Outlook? Gmail contacts?
Linkedin..........................................................................a notenook, perhaps.
This is a dumb question. I came across something that had this type of concept. Sorry for wasting everyone's time.
Just open a spreadsheet...
Networking Contact List (Originally Posted: 09/03/2012)
Hello,
I am in the process of compiling an list of people to get in touch with to build my network given my geographic location and the specific area of finance I am interested in and I have two questions: - What has been in your experience the response rate and the informational interview rate? I need to have a rough idea so I can see how many people I would need on that initial list. I just started putting together the list (around 30 individuals with info/email...) and thought that around a 100 contacts would be a good start. What do you think?
Thanks.
Find five guys and then send five emails. Don't build it up and blow your load all at once. Chances are good you're also going to tweak your email as you go along to make it sound better, less stupid, etc. That's much better than the possibility of sending a crappy email to 100 people.
Never stop cranking out emails and calls until you have an offer in hand. There is no magic number that will guarantee you a job. It's all about timing and, more than anything, luck.
If you can get one person to reply, consider that a victory.
Totally depends upon your geography and the the area of finance, so I can't fully answer your question. haha. Some people in certain places just have less time to reach out.
But olaf has the right idea. Take it slow.
If you want some exact numbers I had a friend who worked into an I-banking internship using this shotgun approach. He sent out 80 emails (Half to PE half IB) and got back about 20 responses. This led to 5 meetings, and 3 interviews, and 1 offer. Good luck to you!
