Networking contacts tapping recruiters
I'm a junior at a Midwestern target with a solid business school (think UMich, UChicago, Northwestern). Through the business school, I've been able to network with a lot students pursuing their MBAs who have previously worked in banking. These students have put me in touch with people from their banks and their friends who could help me with the internship search. In addition, I've met with some family friends for help as well.
Having met all these people, my concern is how best to ensure that this networking positively impacts my chances of my getting a first round interview and, hopefully, a summer offer. Should I encourage each of the people I've met with to e-mail the recruiters from respective banks on my behalf, so that the recruiter is barraged with e-mails from people endorsing my application? Or, should I be less aggressive and kind of encourage only one or two of my contacts from a given bank to e-mail the recruiter?
Essentially, what I'm asking is were the recruiter to receive a barrage of e-mails, would they think "Wow, what a great networker and what great initiative!-this guy deserves a first round interview," or would he think, "This kid is fucking annoying and spamming me-I'm going to ignore his app and wipe my ass with his resume."
Your thoughts are appreciated.
To be honest, a dozen people emailing the recruiter probably isn't going to help you unless you have a close connection with them. Having someone on the inside pass your resume simply gets it into the "friends of employees" pile. It doesn't matter if one person endorses you or five. I'd wager to say having five people, whom you met simply through networking, emailing the recruiter on your behalf would cross into the annoying category. Considering you're at a target and only looking for an internship, you should be getting an interview. If not, the problem is with your resume and not with your networking.
