Networking Event Question.. How to Follow Up

I attended a networking event last night for this large mutual funds company. Is it ok to ask in the "thank you" email that I would like to maybe set up a phone call or coffee with them?

I am only interested in one group so far, so I was going to ask only one person for coffee.

Any thoughts on this networking strategy?

I wouldn't ask for a convo in the same email. The guy will probably get 10-15+ thank you notes within a couple hours, and might not read them all closely. If he misses your invite for a chat, then it's weird to ask again. Just send a straight thank you email, wait 1-3 weeks and email him again saying "blah blah I have some more questions, help plz" and you're more likely to have that email noticed and read.

Usually during the encounters I had while networking I would make a point of establishing some type of connection with them outside of a love for finance. Most often I'd discover some type of sport, a hobby, or maybe music that we both enjoy. This would allow me to easily play off a current event that I saw in the news that may interest them or just discuss a game that was on TV that night. It may seem a bit odd at first, but the receiving end usually appreciates that you remembered that small detail and were not simply using them for leverage.

Another "safe" approach would be to discuss any events related to their firm or the industry. Maybe ask them about their opinion on Wells for example and go from there.
