Networking from Xmas to New Year
Is it a good idea to try and network during Dec 26-Jan 1? My feeling says that I shouldn't interrupt people during the holidays because it might piss them off, but I also get the feeling that ibankers work very hard on these days even when others aren't. What do you all think?
Very interested as well
having the same exact thoughts..
You have the right idea. IF they take those few as vacation days, what's gonna piss them off more than having their blackberries go off, only to realize its some kid? Probably best to wait until the new year.
Do you mean cold calling? I would think it would be pointless to try and cold call/email during this time... However, if you can go to restaurants or bars where your can network in person this is a awesome time.
Just my .02
Wait until the New Year.
If you're really close with certain people, I think they'd be more than happy to have a quick chat over the phone.
Regardless, you should really hold off until after the holidays pass, even if you might be close with someone and/or they're doing absolutely nothing but sitting around.
Definitely call - shows initiative and willingness to give up family/friend time (lol jk you have no friends) for the job, a trait necessary as a 1st year analyst.
You could try but I am not sure how effective it is gonna be. Even if they liked you and wanted to hire you nobody is around (HR, legal etc.) to start with the process. They will probably forget about you after the Holidays and you will have to start over in Jan. anyway.
Seems to be a low upside high risk idea. Depending on what the person you're trying to network with is like, you could impress them with your vigilance, or you could annoy them by bothering them during a private time. It could work out, but I think the costs outweigh the benefits. Better off just waiting the extra 5 days
December 25 to Jan 2 should be a no contact period
^Jan 2 is okay IMO
I'd wait till second week of Jan. Lots of people will still be on holiday from Jan 1-7, and when they get back and sort through their inbox, a cold email is not going make it on their list of priority emails to respond to.
Those dates with banker holidays and any day from 4 - 7AM are ideal times to reach out to network. Preferably send many emails with title FUTURE BANKER NEEDZ HELP !! If you can throw in a few massive attachments with pictures of your self pulling data off Bloomberg or building an accretion table on excel (to show your skills) all the better. If you get no response after 24 hours, don't wait. The person will for sure have seen your email and they just need an extra reminder. Try finding their home line (if not settle for the office one) and leave many messages with stock picks, your view on the market and excel shortcuts they might not know (you want to bring value right away!). If all of this fails it means the banker was impressed but intimidated by the idea of you joining their group. In this case you must go to their office wearing a pin stripe suits and gold cufflinks, this will get you past the receptionist. Once the banker will see you he will know you mean business and will probably invite you for an interview.
I recently asked a version of this question to a contact at JPM, and his suggestion was to wait till 1/6.
That said, I had a 1st round on 12/23, and a follow-up call set for 12/26.
Maybe this is because you guys arent working but after a year of bullshit, you want to be left the fuck alone. Last thing people want is someone interrupting them with "can you give me a job?". Show some emotional intelligence and a wait a week.
