Networking now or later?

So I already posted about my situation so anyone that wants to join in on this topic to get caught up it’s the discussion labeled Needing Advice. Now the big question here is I don’t start school until this fall should I start networking now without even getting into my major ? I feel like me trying to contact someone even at the most professional level will look at me like I am crazy due to the fact that I haven’t even taken one finance class. With that being said I feel like trying to apply for an internship is a huge stretch as well. I could be wrong but I would like to hear from the best and a site note thank you for taking the time to post something let alone reading it.

Just to clarify I am technically a sophomore I have 60+ credits in counterintelligence none in finance.

Just read your other post, pretty cool story and being a vet will help you in diversity recruiting. Other people may not read that thread and think you're a 17 year old freshman so I would add that info to your post.

If you will be a rising junior I would start reaching out now. If you know/can find anyone who was also in the military, that's a huge connection to have and they would likely understand your school situation. I don't know if you're trying to do a finance internship for summer 2019, but given your GPA situation/not having finance courses I agree it will be a stretch. It might be worth it to delay graduation a semester if possible and really go for summer 2020 recruiting with a strong GPA and some finance experience. I would definitely try and get something for 2019, but accelerated recruiting is already happening for a lot of firms, so consider reclassifying into 2020 as well.

I'd just add a sentence in this post clarifying you're not a freshman/are looking for a 2019/2020 internship, your other post is very clear.

I would definitely apply for next summer, see what you get. There's different levels of it.. you might not currently be competitive for IB at GS/JPM, but you can definitely get a boutique/MM role with some networking and if you can explain your situation well. If you have something like that for one summer, the following summer you'll be well set for diversity recruiting at the top firms.

Also I know you haven't taken finance classes yet, but try to learn some of the concepts on your own if you can (look at the interview guides here as a start); it shows some interest in the field to potential employers, plus it might help with your classes this fall.

I see but how am I supposed to network when I haven’t started any finance classes my previous major was counterintelligence, I have a shit gpa, I don’t think anyone is going to want to hear anything from me when I have no clue about finance you know?

it does not matter @Nicholasj.regan" people you are networking with aren't going to be like " oh lets talk about corporate finance and accounting"

you should learn then what finance is-if you are interested in ib/s&t whatever read online, read forums, talk to seniors at your school, talk to first year analysts really understand what you are interested in and then start targeting your networking and reaching out to more senior and senior people as time goes on.

who cares about ur GPA rn - yah it may be hard but if you do not put all your effort in and try your hardest now won't you regret this? Who knows maybe it will lead to something maybe it won't - but that is also for HYP's and whartonites who have GPAs - i know many who have the stats etc school and still don't get it so you just have to work as hard as you can personally.

Make it as important as a class (more important in my opinion since it is ur life)
