Networking - Recently applied for an analyst position

So I recently applied for an analyst position at a mid-sized Asset Management firm. After applying, I realized an alum from my school works for the firm. Should I send an introduction email and ask to speak with him? Would this help me even though I've already applied? If I do contact him, any suggestions on questions to ask, conversation points, etc?

Couldn't hurt to contact him. As you progress in asset management it becomes more and more about your network in terms of finding new positions so its always good to start early! As for what questions to ask, just be humble and ask for his advice about how to get into and do well in the industry. Be appropriately humble and try to avoid coming across as a sycophant. Or, alternately, put yourself in the alums position and consider what type of questions you'd be happy answering from a young un.

Absolutely contact him. Let him know that you applied to the job but would really like to meet with him, talk about the firm, its culture, the industry, etc. Ask for his advice, what makes a good junior level person in AM, etc. Hopefully if he agrees to talk to you and likes you, he can make sure your application gets you a formal interview.

You should definitely contact him - but don't immediately ask for help. Simply state that you've applied for XXX position and want to know if you could ask him a few questions on the team, etc. Keep it casual - if he gets a good vibe from you, he'll most likely try to at least put in a good word.
