Networking with BB's in China

Hi,

I'm interning at an Asset Management company in Beijing right now. I'm currently a rising junior, so I think it wouldn't hurt to network with some investment banks here. I'm on Finance St., so I'm within walking distance from most of the BB's in Beijing. How would I approach networking here? I checked my school alumni base and there isn't anyone working for a BB in Beijing.

I will do another internship in Beijing through Aug to Sept.

You have to be careful. It really depends on the firm. If it's not a joint venture or foreign corporation, then you may wanna think twice before you make any move. Chinese office politics are very complicated. If you got your offer through connection, which I believe you did, then it should be fine. If you really applied to the job and hope to at least get the return offer, then be careful.

Based on my experience, it's almost impossible to get a job through "networking" by yourself. All the people interning now at BBs are through connections, or at least their parent's friends know a MD or the like. You wouldn't be able to meet MDs normally, and if you happen to have a chance to meet an associate or vp, they are not gonna have the "power" to help you too much.

But I would say go try it. Ask you friends which club they go every weekend (Like Mix etc.), and try to visit the office if you can. I would also suggest you to network inside of the AM firm you are interning at. They definitely have some connections at BBs.

Good luck.

I am at a joint venture Asset Management firm right now. Who should I talk to within the firm to get connections to the bulge brackets? I'm assuming if they had connections themselves they wouldn't be working at the AM...
