"Neuroenhancers" and Drugs for College and Banking

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/04/27/090…

So here's a wordy article in the NYer that talks about the use of drugs for performance enhancement in school, the work place, etc.

Most of us here are college kids or analyst/associate level bankers, so I was wondering what you all thought about this topic. I know plenty of peeps using stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin to help them focus on their studies and they seem to be doing well. Any chronic stimulant users on WSO?

Although I'm doing well in school I'm actually thinking of giving these drugs a try sometime when I feel the need for it. Anyone know firsthand about side effects from these drugs? Although I do think that repetitive use can be harmful, I should be ok if I rely on it a bit every couple of months or so right?

Dude there are a ton of us that use everything from water to caffeine to adderall to cocaine.

I'm a caffeine person myself, but I used to use adderall during finals in college, and I must say, that shit works.

Do a search for the "staying awake" thread.

Everyone is different. The major concern would be raising blood pressure, but thats usually not a concern for people sitting at a desk. People have been using stimulants like you mentioned for a LONG time so the side affects are pretty well documented. I find it more strange that these stimulants are actually not MORE prevalent in our society

I know this will be an unpopular opinion but I view those types of stimulants the same way that I view steroids...theyre for cheaters (unless you have a documented medical need). Nothing wrong with a little experimenting but I would never want to form any reliance on those types of substances. With that said, its pretty easy to obtain any of the aforementioned drugs from friends or your local dealer slanging yey/red bull on the corner.

Gotta agree. I joke about using them, but I never would. I don't respect people who do. It shows you lack self confidence and discipline, and are not capable of achieving at even a mediocre level without chemical enhancement. These drugs might help you pump out a term paper or pitchbook at 4 AM, but you're not going to accomplish anything great by using them

600-1000 MG of caffeine per day + AC/DC.

I've cut way way back on stimulants, drugs in general, and supplements in general. Trying to appreciate my mind, body, and nervous system for what it naturally is. Also, all of that stuff has side effects and repercussions that you may not even consider. I'm not saying DARE type stuff. But you might be feeling sluggish on Wednesday and you don't know why. But it's peripheral from some shit you did on Monday or Sunday that you thought had passed.

I'm pretty happy with my natural state of mind, despite all of its shortcomings. Trying not to mess with it too much.

With that said, I'll be trying Noopept once I get my new card in the mail. I've read a lot of good things. And I'll probably go back to doing Oxy some day. And I'm really considering picking up a clonazepam script to use occasionally.

I'm such a fucking hypocrite...
