New Computer Tips for Hedge Fund Analyst
Junior buy-side analyst, expecting to do little to moderate amount of travel. Need to get a new computer. My firm gave me a desktop at work. Currently my setup is flexible, I have no additional screens at home and very little desk space in NYC to get a suitable remote desktop away from the office. My personal computer is a macbook that is barely usable (2010-era). I don't use it often now, but like the idea of having only one computer for both work and personal use. Here's what I'm thinking:
1) Buying top of the line Macbook Pro- running Windows with a Bootcamp Partiioned Hard Drive and a USB windows keyboard for Excel
2) Buying new Macbook and something like a new Surface Pro (have never used one of these; would love to hear any reviews)
3) Getting new entry level Macbook and an entry level Lenovo or Dell or ThinkPad
4) Getting souped up PC and forgetting Apple forever
Any thoughts? Appreciated
Honestly, I'd just go all-out on a top notch windows OS laptop and use the macbook you have for personal stuff you wouldn't want your boss or coworker to see.
I'd suggest this.
Get two separate laptops - one for work and one for personal use. For personal use, get a new 13 inch Macbook Pro. For work, get a trusted brand's laptop with windows installed.
I'm assuming you're not a quant, so you won't need anything powerful (unless you're into playing games).
Honestly, Macbook Pros are the best quality laptops I have ever purchased. Ever since I started using apple products, I have never wanted to use any other brand. Apple are just far too good at assembling quality hardware.
From what I have seen the surface pro 4 is killer. I would definitely buy it if I had the money right now.
I would also get the surface book sold by Microsoft as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adgozfcnws4 and...yeah I may have given 2 videos from the same channel but in my opinion technobuffalo gives pretty good reviews.
1) I've heard mixed stories about running Windows on a Mac. I'd err on the side of caution here just because it'll f*** up when you need it most.
2) I've tried the Surface Pro, and personally I don't like it. However quite a few people I work with love it and think its the best thing since sliced bread. This tends to be more senior people with a lot of meetings so I can see the convenience there.
3&4) Pretty much the same but if you really want to stick to a tight budget and high performance is a must then go with 4. If you're more flexible and want more of a "fun" personal gadget get the mac too.
are you sure you need to buy another computer at all? my firm has 20-30 laptops that they give to you for travel, etc. so buying one isn't really necessary; i would check to see if your fund has something similar.
I suppose you could buy one to work from home but will you really work from a laptop at home? I flirted with the idea of getting a nice setup for my apt but then I realized that I actually don't want to do work in my apt (besides general reading, note taking, etc.) for a variety of reasons.
Thinkpad. T450s. Or X250 if you want smaller.
Thank you all for your responses, a range of opinions but definitely helpful. I think I'm going to go with just a new MacBook now for personal use and wait on a backup work computer as there isn't a pressing need at the moment.
I got tired of using my 2011 MacBook Pro, and tried the new MacBook, MB Pro, surface book, and SP4. After trying all of these for two weeks each (The guys in the store know me at this point), I landed on the Surface Pro 4. It's a laptop that is ultra portable, and it's just cool in ways the New MacBook Pro/ MacBook are not. I can easily remote login from anywhere, and it's been great to have on flights. I was turned off from the kickstand stabilizer at first, but it actually doesn't bother me now and I use it in all kinds of weird 'slouchy' positions. Side note: I can also run stream, adobe premiere (4K footage), and expand the storage with an SD slot. It has 4x the ram my old MacBook had, and the difference is highly noticeable.
