New job at Marcus and Millichap - Advice for recent grads going into CRE in NYC
I'm graduating in a few months and looking to go into the real estate business in NYC. Specifically, I'm looking to become a commercial real estate broker. I've spoken to a ton of people about this work. Mostly veterans in the industry. They all basically say the same thing "Work hard", "Be prepared for commission roller coasters", "You better have a good personality".
I'm going to brag a bit here. I'm well spoken, and people like me - so I think I've got the personality for this job. What I want to know is what it's like as a recent grad trying to make it as a commercial real estate broker. Everyone that has talked to me about this says "be prepared to make no money for 8-12 months". I've basically prepared for this (I'm going to work on the weekends for some extra cash). But does that 8-12 month figure represent everyone across the board, or is that a "if you're sub par" number? Some actual success/horror stories would be great.
Just a note here, I'll be able to take a risk on this commission job, because I can commute from my parents home into the city. I also have no student loans. Based on those factors that's basically the only way I can take a job like this. Also, I've got an interview at M&M in the city in a few weeks, any advice from anyone works there/has interviewed there?
