Is it ever appropriate to email a contact with just an update?
As the title states, is it ever appropriate to email a contact with just an update on my interest in their firm?
More details:
I networked pretty aggressively at the beginning of the summer (think May-June). I had some great conversations with two people at a certain investment bank, and they invited me to keep in touch with them as SA recruiting came closer.
I recently attended their firm's corporate presentation, but it was held by a different office of their firm (my contacts work at their HQ).
I want to email my contacts and just remind them, "Hey, look, remember me?" But I'm not sure what the best way to go about doing it would be. I don't really have any more questions that I need to ask them. Between my information interviews in the summer, their corporate presentation, and my own research, I feel like I have my main bases covered as far as their firm goes.
Would it be appropriate for me to just shoot them an email and say something along the following lines?
Hi Rock Star Banker,
Hope you've been doing well. I've been doing more research into your firm since we last spoke, and attended your firm's corporate presentation yesterday. I want to drop you a quick update to reaffirm my interest in your firm due to x and y. After completing a summer internship at [x firm], I'm sure that investment banking is what I want to do.
Thanks, and look forward to speaking again soon!
Sincerely,
John Doe
What do you guys think?
Thoughts below. Don't use exclamation points.
I would try to find a way to ask a question anyway, even if it's just their viewpoint or involvement with something. You should always give someone the opportunity to 'talk' (because people live to, usually) and you should allow them to sell the firm to you. In their mind, they would never try to sell a position to someone they didn't think was a strong candidate. In reality, they try to sell the firm/role to anybody who will listen, but most people are just begging for a job, so they don't often have to do so. Bankerella wrote a topic about this recently and I agree it's effective for job seekers.
Hi Rock Star Banker,
I hope you've been doing well. I attended your firm's corporate presentation yesterday. They mentioned _____ [aspect of firm/deal/ranking/whatever] which piqued my interest and I wanted to get your viewpoint on the subject as well.
I look forward to speaking again soon.
Sincerely, John Doe
New Job / E-Mailing New Contact Info to Your Network (Originally Posted: 06/08/2017)
Just finished b-school, starting a new gig soon. I've consolidated all contacts I've met prior to and over the past two years into Outlook, and would like to remain in touch moving forward. At the least, I was thinking of sending an brief e-mail with eCard attached to everyone but wasn't sure whether to exclude those I have met from firms that 1) I interviewed with and didn't get an offer 2) Interviewed with, got an offer and declined it and 3) compete directly with the firm I am going to work for. Thoughts? My goal is to remain professional and NOT come off as "hey look at my new job"--my fear is being perceived this way from parties that fit into buckets 1,2, and 3 (see above)...
I can offer no help, but I'm in a somewhat similar position, will be moving to a "competing" firm in the near future, and was going to ask this question in like a week. Hopefully someone chimes in.
Not a lot to contribute, but I would phrase it as a sort of thank you to your network i.e. "Thank you for all of your help, advice, and mentorship in the past 2 years... blah blah blah"
You can always send separate emails to the various groups you mentioned, changing the tone a bit throughout. Real estate is small enough that it's not like you won't run into these people, unless they're in other markets, and even then you never know.
You will run into those people***
Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I was thinking about doing what SirTradesaLot suggested, but the problem is coming with something to ask that doesn't sound retarded.
If, for example, the bank was Piper Jaffray or HL, at the corporate presentation they would have perhaps lauded their bank's collegiate atmosphere or the fact that junior bankers only spend a tiny fraction of their time making pitches. But I'm just not sure whether or not these are things that are "discussion-worthy," or if I'll just come across as some annoying kid that hasn't done his research before getting in contact.
What would you guys say is a good discussion topic to pitch to a banker in a follow up email?
