Newly Hired Full-Time Undergraduate Equity Research Q&A
Hey guys,
I am an undergraduate student at a top 10 business school who was recently hired full-time for a mid-makret equity research position. I also interned in a healthcare equity research role over the summer.
If you guys have any questions about the industry, internships, or breaking in, feel free to post a comment and I will respond as quickly as I can. This website has been really helpful for me, so I feel like it is a good way to give back.
Congrats on the offer and thanks for doing the ama. Couple of questions:
1) I know modeling is a big part of the job. How did you improve your modeling skills to the point where you were able to excel at the modeling test, assuming you had one?
2) How did you differentiate yourself from other candidates who may be as qualified ,if not more, than you?
3) How much did you know about the industry before you interviewed for the position?
Thanks.
1) I was not given a modeling test at any of the firms I interviewed with. I had two offers with middle market firms and another offer with a top bulge bracket. In my process, it seemed like firms want you to have some prior modeling experience, whether that be through school, but fit is more important. I had a class in school where I wrote and initiation report and built a model from scratch so that was a big help.
2) I differentiated myself by bringing in my initiation report, industry report, and model I built/wrote during my junior year in college. I think showing you have a passion and actually have work to back up that passion is very important. Fit is KEY, because your team size is very small, so you need to get along well with your analyst and culturally fit into the firm.
3) Everywhere I interviewed was for the equity research department in general, and I will be placed on a team at a later time. I didn't know anything about healthcare before. Just make sure you have a long and a short pitch and know what is happening in the world economy and have an opinion in it.
I have an interview for an entry level equity research position covering healthcare this week. Any guidance you can give with regard to the industry and what technical aspects I will be tested on is much appreciated.
Talk about your interview process. How long did it take. What were the steps in the process. How do you think you stood out, and anything else you can add. Thanks
Also, how is the learning curve in the early stages going?
Congrats but not sure how someone who is still in school and has only a summer internship can provide material help with regards to anything outside of the interview process...
Hi all,
Happy as well to piggyback off of this and answer any questions. I have 5 years of EQR experience (BB and midmarket) and often interviewed people for first/second rounds.
Hi, I'm currently participating in summer analyst recruiting and I had a few first rounds and haven't received any positive results. I'm a year out of undergrad and currently in a 1yr masters program. I'm quite interested in the industry but worrying about my options with breaking in are running out.
Any suggestions on hedging my chances if I don't get a summer, or subsequently no off-cycle. Should I try to go for an industry financial analyst role, or do something else in the bank and hope to lateral internally?
Would really appreciate any advice.
If I may ask, starting salary and location?
Hi, I recently received an offer at Capital One's Finance Rotation Program (Corp Fin) and Bloomberg as a Global Data Analyst. I want to do ER in the long term and was wondering if any users had advice regarding which would be a better starting point? Perhaps going through one of the programs to top 15(?) MBA to ER?
