NFL and Pizza Hut Sponsorship

Couldn't believe I haven't seen anything about this on WSO so I thought I'd throw this up there.

Pizza Hut will be the next official pizza sponsor the National Football League after a falling-out between the league and Papa John’s.

Feel like that says it all right there. After a football season that was marked with much controversy centered around NFL players taking a knee during the national anthem, Pizza Hut will now step in to be the official pizza sponsor.

Unless you were living under a rock for the past couple of months, you remember John "Papa" Schnatter taking a very public stance against players taking a knee. His comments were backed up with him saying Papa John's was losing sales because people associated his brand with being anti-American and therefore not ordering pizza. It's not a surprise this relationship ended this off season, but it's interesting to see that Pizza Hut (Yum Brands) swooped in so soon to become the official pizza of the NFL after Papa John's exited.

Feel like if you're Pizza Hut you have to learn from the mistakes of Papa John's and just keep your mouth shut when it comes to highly sensitive issues with the NFL. It's just the right business decision.

An exactly dollar amount for the sponsorship wasn't announced and I'm curious as to what you guys think that is? Is it even worth it to be associated with the NFL anymore too?

Pizza Hut just got passed by Dominos as the largest pizza chain in the world, I assume at this point their board (YUM), figures the NFL brand, however "tarnished" (and I use that expression tongue-in-cheek), will help to stem that loss.

As of late YUM has really been leaning on TacoBell to drive growth (look up the KFC shortages in the UK and couple that with the above Dominos news) and I assume any news about something that isn't the next cyborg-taco-dilla-supreme is good news to shareholders.

I say all this as a lover of the always delicious TacoBell

Taco Bell has really been making big pushes in SE Asia after failing their initially.

Pizza Hut is a national chain for YUM so I guess using the NFL as a platform to advertise is a great strategy when you're looking to capture an audience around the nation.

Ratings were down pretty substantial. And the NFL isn’t cheap. The whole kneeling bullshit ended, but the ratings were still down.

Endless replays, super high ticket prices, politicizing of everything and people cutting the cord problem drove all of this.

Pizza Hut is OK in person, but their delivery is nasty. Enjoy those ad dollars.
