No finance experience, should I email an alum I know works at a HF?

I am an experienced hire looking to get a leg into finance and hopefully banking. I would take an unpaid internship that helped with more technical skills like modeling. I am currently unemployed and thinking of going back to school for a Masters, but my undergrad is a top 10 target. I wanted to know, would it hurt my future opporutnities with these alum if I emailed them in my current situation for a break-in possibly no pay internship for the summer?

Or should I just stick to boutiques?

You should leverage all available contacts with the realistic expectation that nothing will pan out. What's your background and story for wanting to make the jump? If your goal is banking your ideal path is top MBA as a career switcher. Only chance at a HF is if you have some industry specific knowledge or someone who is willing to take a chance on you (unlikely given how competitive the field, how many qualified candidates, limited number of spots, etc.) but it only takes one yes. Good luck.

I can do a basic DCF (took a modeling course) read financial statements, analyze a 10k etc and can use excel efficeintly . I haven't gotten as deep enough on deprectiatinon shedules, revenue segmentation, but I just wonder if I did get an internship what should I look at?

How much AUM in deals should the MD have experienced at a boutqiue shop in say gas and oil? What if they just hire me for the next 3 months to do no modeling and just make me get coffee and write overviews ONLY?
