Non-Big 4 Valuation & Opinions Analyst Info Needed

Hi all,

I recently got invited to interview for a valuation analyst position at a MM IB. This was a verbal invite through a very senior person at the bank. After looking through their website, however, I realized that the team is looking for mostly experienced hires (1-3 years experience). Moreover, I checked the profiles of some of the current valuation analysts on Linkedin and almost all of them were lateral hires with previous big 4 experience. So my question is:

  1. Being that I am going to be graduating this May and I am not a finance or accounting major (read: very little modeling experience), what level of valuation proficiency would a non-big 4 firm be looking for? Obviously I would have to know the basics (which I am confident I do know), but what else would be fair game? 3 statement models? Advanced Accounting?

Obviously given my lack of professional experience and background, I am worried that I may not be able to ace my interview and thus potentially strain a good relationship I have with the person who is willing to help me get the interview in the first place. Any info or advice would be helpful. Thanks WSO!
