Non-Finance people have some ugly resumes

Seems like if you arent interested in IB or just in Finance in general, your resume looks terrible.

Looked at my friends resume's... Psych majors, engineering, art, english, whatever..

No proper formatting. Large fonts, tons of white spaces, weird fonts, whatever.

Where is the attention to detail?

I thought about it and you have to realize that banks are looking for conformity. For other employers who aren't as anal they may have the time to read every run on sentence.

Other people make resumes to stand out. We write ours to fit in.

Although the objective/personal section peeves me regardless

Some of the best ways to get hired in finance are completely absurd. I understand it's a result of a competitive profession without any particular technical demands, but the qualities that make one person get an edge over another (I think I read something about "Thai Slap Boxing" as an interest on this site recently, or on some other finance site) are very frustrating to us plain vanilla folk. If I go home and play Starcraft in a dark room after work, and some other asshole is the chairman of his town's competitive underwater basket weaving league, what does that say about either of our job performance?

Not entirely related to your post, but for an engineer whose GPA says a lot more about their ability than that of a banker, having a pristine resume is probably a lot less of a concern. And everyone knows lib arts majors are doing well to just turn on a computer and open Word, much less produce a strong resume.

Liberal arts major here - got my first gig talking to a dude in a bar over shots of Jameson. Honestly, before coming to this site, I though business people were generally a bunch of conformist tools. That theory has been confirmed.

My soul is dying, but fuck it, The Man Pays Well so I can play along.

Cheers

@UFOinsider,

Amen to that. What did you study in college?

Started in engineering, HATED IT Went to comp sci, realized my knowledge would be obsolete before graduating Went to premed, family tragedy and five years off from school Went back, got psych degree to get the sheepskin and move on with life

If I could do it over, I would do a double major in accounting and math OR finance and history.

What did you study?

If I could do college all over again, I would double major in history with finance or philosphy. It bugs me that i'am a senior and never took a history class even though I am a huge history buff an obsessed with ancient history.

Anyone who I know who went through recruiting knows "THE TEMPLATE," whether for IB or consulting, and never fucks it up. I did recruiting at my old firm for two years, and regardless of major it made me smile when my school's appliants weren't major fuckups. At least they all looked uniform, even if many times the content was garbage.

It's funny, the worst applications were always from Harvard... I had one girl send me a three page resume, one full of all her music accomplishments in conducting/on the violin. KTHX YOU CAN'T FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, even if you conducted the fucking Boston Phil.

All of my friend's resumes look like shit. And yet they have decent jobs. I don't get it.

I guses some people just don't care. I think it's unprofessional to have a garbage resume.

My name is Nicky, but you can call me Dre.

You guys have no idea. I had a friend submit a two page resume so that he could stand out from others. That's one quick way to stand out in a garbage bin, haha. If you want your resume to cover two pages, at least fill the second page. It looks ridiculous when people only fill in the first quarter/half of the second page. Most non-business majors (target or non-target) have no idea how substance works on a resume. I've seen resumes from people who worked at clothing stores/restaurants that say things like: "operated cash register" and "provided friendly customer service." It's something else really.
