Non-target and older student.
How bad of a non-target is this school http://www.hanover.edu/ ?
I've been reading a little on the forums about targets/non targets ect but is there a huge difference in the quality of non-targets?
A little history, I started my own business at 17 my first semester of college I started making some serious money and dropped out and withdrew from a lot of classes. I'm 21 now and I recently sold my business and moved. I now have a management/marketing job in the same industry making 45k per year with a 15k benefit package. I'm enrolled in a community college retaking classes to boost my GPA. So far I have a 4.0 while working 50 hour weeks. I have a decent chunk of cash in the bank, and while looking at ways to invest it I became interested in finance. 100 hours a week doesn't scare me as much as others, I've done it before with about 50% of the work being manual labor.
I'm not shooting for GS, just a decent job at a small firm or PNC bank in Louisville (very close to me). I would love to get into IU's Kelly but even when I fix my gpa I will have a crappy transcript. Hanover would be very convenient, and I would have no problem getting in.
So my questions are
- How does Hanover rate as a school in the I-banking community? Or does it at all?
- Does full time work experience in management and sales/marketing before your undergrad help or hurt you? Will my age hurt? (21 and freshmen)
Feel free to proverbially rip me apart just throw in some scraps of good info while your doing it.
To answer your first question I don't think anyone in IB has ever heard of Hanover.
I thought as much. The reason I even ask was that through searches I found people on linkedin working in I banking that were alumni.
I've never heard of it. Looked it up and seems quite small, so there is likely not much of an alumni network in finance to help you out.
I'd do whatever you can to get into IU though. Even if you had a bad transcript in the past a 4.0 at a CC while working 50 hours a week plus having started and sold your own business is pretty impressive and could very well get you into a good school if you can discuss it the right way in admissions essays. Would make for a good story in banking recruiting too. Good luck.
Anon04 -- Don't listen to some of these the guys on the forum. School name will only limit you to a certain extent, and in your case, your own business will play very well in your favor.
PM me and I'd be happy to speak with you.
Just looking at the title, I thought you were in the thirties. I personally know many people at age 24~26 having no problem breaking into BB IBD, S&T, whatnot. And I think you have a cooler story than they do. Hanover? You mean Dartmouth? Oh wait, it's not. I guess you gotta network then.
