Non-Target Looking for Direction
Hey Everyone,
This is my first post. I am a senior economics major (non-target) with a 3.5 GPA, and I have no internship experience. I attempted to find one junior year, but was completely unprepared for how competitive it was. I do have some work experience, but it does not lend itself to many areas of finance.
I know that I am much more interested in commercial/corporate banking (especially C&I lending) than other areas such as IB and trading. I am also more interested in the risk/analysis side than the deal-making side, but beyond this I don't really have a clear path so here are some questions.
Given my lack of experience, and mediocre GPA should I even bother going after some of the top firms in NYC? If so which ones?
What positions should I specifically look for? For example CCAR is interesting to me but I doubt I have the requisite math.
Would I be better off avoiding NYC entirely and just try to break into a decent sized commercial bank?
Is there any other advice anyone can offer me besides trying to network more?
Have you tried for any off cycle internships?
Thanks for the reply. I have not applied to any so far. Unless I could find something on a part time basis I think that doing so would not work with next semester schedule. Either that or I would have to delay my graduation. Is that something you would recommend?
Yes, try for something off cycle. They are almost always unpaid and part time.
