Northeastern to NYU Stern as an upcoming junior

Hi guys, I am currently a 2nd-year finance student at Northeastern with a 3.97 GPA. I just realize I am into consulting and IB but mostly consulting at MBB. Knowing that NEU is a nontarget, I am thinking to apply for NYU Stern or CAS. What is your tip and is it worth it to transfer at this time. I will be going on co-op my next semester so I would definitely have time to prepare. Thanks yall

Stern undergrad is notoriously hard to transfer into, but your GPA is great so maybe you have a shot. That said, and from experience, Stern undergrad (unlike the MBA) is very very very finance-focused. So while the school is exceptional if you want to work in finance, there aren’t as many consulting resources. What that means for you is that Stern only sends ~5 people to MBB in a major office (NYC/LA/Chicago...) every year and most of the consulting recruiting comes from T2 shops like the Big 4, Accenture, or Kearney.

My advice would be to transfer if you can because you’ll definitely get better OCR than at Northeastern, but if you’re MBB or bust, it might be worth looking at another school. Also, if you’re looking to get into IB, transferring in as a junior is too late as you’ll miss out on summer analyst recruiting

TL;DR: Stern is amazing for finance (and tech if you’re into that - there’s a niche of people going to FAANG product/marketing/data science roles), great for general business roles at F500s, but not as strong in consulting (target for T2 firms, not so much for MBB)

Thank you so much for your help! Is it worth going if by any chance I get into CAS and might have to do Econ instead of Finance?

For consulting, I don't think it matters too much if you're in Stern or CAS because firms want diverse profiles. Just double-major in Math and Econ in CAS and make sure to have a high GPA and you'll get some looks. For other fields though (especially finance), CAS kids are at a disadvantage

I'm a junior at Stern and just finished recruiting for IB SA 2021. Before transferring in as a junior, I was in NYU CAS for 2 years (Econ&Math) and can say that Stern definitely opens a lot more doors for me when it comes to banking networking/recruiting. I'm not sure about consulting though, but I think having the Stern name would help. Given your GPA, I think you stand a very good chance of transferring into Stern. A lot of people like to make it seems as if transferring into Stern is near impossible, but honestly I think with near perfect GPA it's pretty doable.

I know a few people in CAS and they said you do have to try harder to compete with all the stern kids. I am not that interested in CAS which makes the transfer decision a bit harder. But I will def consider it. Tysm for your input

As a senior who has secured a top IB offer from Northeastern, if you're set on IB, there's really no reason to leave at this point. Almost any BB/MM offer is accessible at this point. You might have to work a little harder than a NYU Stern kid, but being a top student at Northeastern might be easier than a small fish in the large Stern pond.

As for MBB, if that is your ultimate goal, definitely leave. NEU sucks for MBB recruiting lol.
