Not 21... intern outings
So I'm underage, and I was wondering if anyone who interned while underage could share their experience regarding group outings. I have absolutely no worries about the drinking aspect (I don't need a drink in my hand to be social), but I've noticed that a lot of bars card you just to get in. If I can't even get in the bar to be with my team, aren't I just shit out of luck? THanks
Depends on the group, but I’ve been using a fake to get in and either drinking or not depending on who else is there. My group is pretty chill though and usually encourages me to drink anyways lol
Damn so even when you pull up with a large group dressed in suits you still get carded?
We're not in office fully yet so no one is dressed in suits. Most places don’t card cause I look old but some still do
1. Enter with a large group
2. Don’t ever mention you’re not over 21
How would you weigh the risk/reward of #2 - had a great midpoint review and feel as if I'm on track for an offer. Weighing the marginal benefit I'd get from going to a bar with everyone vs. the huge downside of getting my fake rejected in front of the FT bankers lmao
Imo you should play it safe and not use the fake/drink around senior bankers. I've heard a story about an intern losing her offer at the end of the summer because she tried to use a fake at a firm-sponsored open bar...while the people on your team probably don't really care, if HR/compliance ever found out they definitely would.
I think I faced some of this when I interned as my birthday is late summer. Most of the company-sponsored events were fine as there was mgmt/Hr and/or an MD and the places kinda saw it like some kids went out with their “parents” or something like that and didn’t care if I was a bit underage. Where it was a bit trickier was when my summer analyst class and crew wanted to go out for drinks as like a crew and they were all of age or at least willing to use a fake maybe, I don’t remember. I didn’t feel so comfy doing that so I kinda just tried to politely bow out or something. Maybe I was wrong to do that. Idk. I ended up moving to another place FT anyway, maybe that was part of the factor. Idk
Most of the time, probably no big deal. I think it’s pretty common and most people won’t think twice about it. The question is whether you want to roll the dice on someone who cares finding out… definitely feels like a “picking up pennies in front of a freight train” risk/reward profile
