Not Returning FT IB
Did a summer ib internship and honestly not sure if I can handle the work/life balance and not interested in the bayside path. Looking more into consulting or corporate development/strategy type roles down the line. Just wanted to see what others in a similar position have done that decided to move out of IB after the summer and how difficult it was to transition into your current career.
In careers you must consider 3 things:
a) What you're passionate about
b) What you're good at
c) What gets you paid
I used to think about the whole IB thing too, mostly because it was prestigious. Then I realized that I can impress people the exact same way in AM. Both the AM and the IB guys live in their own bubbles anyway.
The problem in finance for a really long time has been this brainless desire to go into doing stuff you don't like (read: IB) just to get $/prestige/success. Reality is that you can reach similar highs through other means. I have in the past referred back to this screenshot here which was my first connection with the framing of ones career in the field. I'm not going to say that graph is fully factual, but that is certainly somewhat realistic in describing the landscape.
At the end of the day it is your decision as to how much you are willing to put up with to get to your preferred position the fastest.
