NY Moving guide
Hi Guys,
I know this is kinda early, but I will be moving to NY next year in the summer or work. I don't know much about NY, but could you describe your move-in experience, some good places for first analysts to live, and also if you used an agent or not? I hear agents are big in NY but also expensive. Thanks.

Try to not use an agent if possible, not worth it. Start your search on StreetEasy, you can filter for “no fee” apts. Also, look into some of the larger rental buildings/firms (related, rose, etc). There is no good reason to use an agent unless you are looking for something specific OR if you can get a better deal from a privately owned condo (they’ll usually list with an agent and they’ll take a cut regardless).
As for areas, it depends what you are looking for. I would recommend living close to work (or as short of a subway ride as possible). So Goldman is in tribeca/battery park where JPM is more midtown (and on the east side). If you like going out, LES/East Village are good areas. Murray hill is relatively affordable and has a lot of recent college grads (more of a stereotypical “frat” scene). And SoHo/Greenwich Village/West Village if you want something quieter but still with a lot to do (although some of the most expensive areas in Manhattan).
Other things to note: many places will require 1 month security deposit and first month up front. Hire movers if you can afford it. I wouldn’t invest too much in furniture until you are living there for a bit and know what you want/like. You’ll probably spend more on food out than you imagine. And air conditioners, laundry, and dish washers are a “luxury” in nyc.
Thank you
