NY vs CA Exits

How do NY offices of EBs (specifically CVP/EVR/LAZ) compare to their SF offices in terms of PE exit opps and "prestige." If I'm looking to eventually recruit for MF/UMM PE, will I have more opportunities coming from NY?

CA will have an edge for CA GE shops (of which there are more in CA than NY) but NY will have an edge for NY GE shops. Making the jump between the two isn't hard at all as long as you articulate your desired geography early on with recruiters with good reason.

Most top GE groups are headquartered on the East Coast though (e.g. GA/Insight/Summit/TA). Wouldn't this make NY IB more favorable for top GE exits?

No. Also there are several top GE firms (even those built into predominantly VC funds) which are most definitely based out of Palo Alto/Menlo Park. Like I said, per OP, if you're in a good group on either coast you should be able to make a move to an opposite coast as long as you flag the move as being okay early on with your recruiters. The geographical edge I've seen over the years has come into play for T2 cities and below such as Boston or Houston but for places like NY, SF or LA I've rarely seen a big barrier for candidates, especially those who are eager to make the move.

Not OP but can you give examples of some of those Palo Alto/Menlo Park funds you are talking about? I'm very interested in California but most of the top players I am familiar with are in Boston and New York.
