Living in NYC for the summer- Where are best places to stay?
Hey guys- I'll be working in IB this summer at a BB, & was wondering where are the best places or where I can look into getting a room or somewhere to live for the 10 weeks. Any tips suggestions for specific buildings or locations to live?
east village.
NYU dorms
Kings college
Jersey, definitely Jersey
If you choose a NYU building make sure it's an apartment and not a dorm. A dorm requires a meal plan to come with it and is in general worse shape.
I remember the ones near union square being somewhat decent for the price (may be too far back now)
Somewhere to live? I have a bathtub you can use for $1000 a month.
You should probably tell us where you will be working. CS is in FiDi, GS is in Battery City Park, MS and Barclays are in Times Square, the rest are in Midtown East.
Where to live in NYC for SA at GS? (Originally Posted: 11/10/2013)
Title says it all. Where do you recommend living as a summer intern, if you have to go to 200 West. Looking to save some money but still have a decent time...not commuting too far.
Are you asking specifically which NYU dorm is best? Or is this your way of not so subtly bragging?
That would help (which NYU dorm.) Not trying to brag...lol I just know that GS is not in the same area as most other BB's so I thought people might live in different areas...like brooklyn. Just looking for any advice, don't know NY well at all.
GS is sort of annoying to access from many parts of the city so if you want to walk, getting a place in the financial district or around that area is pretty nice (and can also be cheaper than NYU housing). In terms of which NYU dorm, you might find dorms like Lafayette to be slightly closer, but overall, I'd pick by distance from the subway station instead of overall distance.
A lot of kids like to live in Stuy town, but I wouldn't recommend it because I've heard nightmares with the L-train and really don't think it's worth it to transfer trains. I'd say a safe bet is anywhere around union square or washington square (and use google maps to determine distance from subway station from dorm).
Hoboken is really nice too. PATH train to WTC is less than 10 minutes.
ton of people do NYU housing
Stick with NYU housing. There are plenty of off-campus opportunities, but if you are not from here, then it is not worth the headache. All of the NYU dorms are centrally located, so I'd pick the layout more than convenience.
Avoid Lafayette. It's nasty. The ones around Union Square are good. There is a lot of transportation that will take you downtown.
NYU housing unless you're really worried about saving money, then live in the Financial District.
I really enjoyed living in Jersey City - Exchange Place, Newport, and Hoboken are all fine. The PATH train is super convenient, and the WTC station is really close to 200 West. The ferry also stops just a few minutes away from 200 West.
NYU or New School dorms are probably the most popular choices for GS summers.
However, if you look around craig's list you may be able to find some good deals. Make sure that the apartment is in Battery Park City or on the west side of the financial district. The commute from the east side of the financial district to 200 West is even more inconvenient than living up town because there is no public transportation. Hope this helps.
I stayed in Brooklyn Heights a few years ago, and just took the 2-3 to Wall Street (10 min ride). You would probably take it to Canal, so it's like 15 mins.
The place is pretty much a dorm for kids with internships in NYC, so you meet a lot of kids.
You got the job so early? When was the superday?
I rented a place on Gold St. for $1300. Had a spacious single room within an apartment to myself, and a 15min walk to the office.
is there a site where SA's can find groups of other SA's to rent apartments together for the summer??

Landed NY IBD SA position, where do people typically live over the summer?
how did u land an offer if they have not even had super days yet?
they have had super days... at least one since I was involved in one. And how is living in NYU dorms? Would I be stuck with a random roommate? Is it a good location?
Ooooooooo
this has never been answered ever so it definitely deserves a new thread.
Nyu dorms
Live in the cheapest possible spot within walking distance.
In rank order 1. Location, 2. Cost.
The last thing you want to do is commute if you're trying to land yourself am offer, recipie for disaster.
This advice applies to all banks regardless of location or firm size, losing an offer is much worse than saving a few hundred bucks.
JPM fills its class slowly. I think they have normal superdays in Dec. as well as diversity superdays. Then superdays last through February. My understanding is that most OCR is in Jan.-early Feb.
NYU is decent. It's not the best bang for your buck, but it's pretty easy to get around (if you're near Union Square or Canal Street) and saves you the hassle of subletting. You can sign up with friends from school and a lot of companies reserve a block of rooms for their interns. I lived in NYU housing for two summers and lived with other interns at my firm both summers.
hey im at jpm s&t this summer. I'm really interested in this as well and I got a little insight. PM me
Congrats! Do you have any idea when placement day takes place? Also, did you do Launching Leaders?
Hi! I will be interning at MS, anyone have a suggestion about housing? MS is exactly on Times Square.
What do other people think on NYU- if working in Midtown seems like it might be better as a SA to live a bit closer? Also NYU turns out to be pretty expensive- checked out the rates and they pretty much force you to either 1. pay for a meal plan or 2. pay for a pricier room that doesn't have a meal plan. All in 1200-1400/month (seems like a lot to pay for a dorm-room), though I suppose you pay by the week which is pretty nice (no worry about renting for 3 months vs. 2.5).
Find a summer sublet on CL if you can. Might be tough to find one for three months so you might end up switching between two places halfway through your SA summer but it is probably the cheapest alternative.
NYU is a good option too despite the price, except you are going to crowd up my subway stop (W 4th) going to Midtown. For people concerned about living close, subway from NYU to midtown takes me roughly 10-20 mins from my apt to my building so its super quick anyways. It is going to take you almost the same walking from some midtown skyscraper unless its across the street. So if you are gonna be at MS, BAML, BarCap, RBS etc. than NYU is a great option.
Hey everyone, I am interning at BNP Paribas this summer (office next to Timesquare). Anyone interning at Barclays/MS/JPM (mid-town offices) want to look for housing together?
s&t?
Interning at MS this summer..are you still looking for a place?
NYU housing is expensive but you're paying a lot of convience here and location. Even though you're working in Midtown, NYU has a lot of dorms spread out around the village that have access to different train lines. Just make sure that the dorm you're requesting is near your appropriate line so it's a straight shot on the subway in the morings
Any other Citi interns looking for summer housing? Anyone want to look together?
I've heard good things about NYU and EHS
I've heard good things about the NYU dorms as well, but they are a little out of my price range. I'm interning at Citi this summer, and I've been trying to find something to share in brooklyn. Anyone has any leads?
Already applied for NYU housing, does anyone know of any other options in case NYU falls through? Will most likely be working in Midtown East.
I have friends living at SVA. Not too sure about the locations of the apartments, though.

Hello there!
Just found out I'm about to start my internship in NYC in a month
Searching for housing now and it's kinda late since most are filled
Any suggestion?
Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best deals are probably gone but I am pretty sure that you can still find a decent spot for a decent price. I would definitely not worry or panic about it.
A month is a long time to find a place in NYC. As previous poster said, don't panic, you will find a place and it will be fine. You can try street easy or a myriad of other websites/apps to find a place.
Thanks a lot guys :))
You can also try PadMapper to search for apartments, it's pretty useful.
Check out the NYU student housing. Most Manhattan NYU residence halls are within a 20 minute metro ride to Wall st and you get to be around other interns all summer.
Good luck!

I'll be making >$1000 week.
Also, how fast do I need to get on this? Are all the good places gone by now?
Thanks in advance!

URGENT: Late NYC Summer Housing Needed for 3 Months!! (Originally Posted: 05/16/2012)
Hi all,
I just received a boutique SA offer from a firm in NYC located on Midtown. I need to find housing and I've been looking on Craigslist for awhile now but can't quite find something I'm looking for.
The internship is in IB so I need something as close to work as possible. There's a ton of Brooklyn/Wash Heights and Harlem, but I really want to avoid that area.
Any suggestions? Anyone else looking? I need a place from June 1 - End of Aug
yeah actually i'm looking to sublet a room in my apt. in chinatown if you're interested
PM'ed you

Anyone figure out housing for their summer internships? I am trying to find housing near Midtown, and don't want to settle on NYU dorms. What are other options people have done in the past and have enjoyed? I am open to getting a few people together who are interning in midtown to look for something together.
Bump...
Also curious
It's too early for those types of housing arrangement. You can find stuff in midtown for around $2000 a month. Gets you your own bedroom.
New York SA living?? (Originally Posted: 03/08/2012)
Going to be at Citi in NY this summer.... Where are people living mostly? I know NYU seems to be the main choice, but are there any other reasonable options?
Search function dude. There was a guy here two days ago working SA at C and asking where to live.

I have a place in SoHo I'm trying to sublet out for the summer (I just moved to a different city for work)! Prime location. Seriously. Spring St. and Lafayette.
Available May through the end of August for a subsidized $1,600 / mo, fully furnished.
Check out nofeerentals.com
They have housing for the summer. and you'll get your own room as opposed to sharing one at NYU.
Thanks for the offer Dew, but I am looking for a 2 bed appt. with a roommate I already have, and thanks bernankey
Hey Dew, very interested in subletting your apartment during May. Please Let me know if it is still available.
NYC Summer Housing Needed (Originally Posted: 03/27/2014)
My two friends and I will be BB IBD SA's in NYC this summer and are having trouble finding a place to live. Last summer I sublet in East Village and hated it. If anyone has a place they are looking to sublet for the summer (June 1 to August 31) please contact me. We are looking for 3 bedrooms (Open to 4 bedrooms if available) and at least 2 full bathrooms. We would like to live in the Chelsea/West Village/Meatpacking areas (open to others but nothing above 60th street). Price range $1000-2000 per person per month (Total $3000-$6000 per month), or 4 people ($4000 - $8000 per month). Would like to spend around $1500 per person ideally. PM me if you have anything or trusted sites/brokers you have used. Thank you.
You find anything? I'm going to be a summer analyst at a BB and am looking for roommates as well.

For those who have gone through their SA summers in NYC and didn't live in the dorms, how'd you get your sublease.... any good sources outside of craigslist? And when did you get it (April, May etc.)
Also, did you bite the bullet on paying for 3 months, or did you manage to get 2.5 month subleases...
For this summers SA's, has anyone found any luck in getting a short-term sublease assuming you are living in midtown or below? I know there is a lot of upper east and west side availability but that distance from FiDi is to much...
I did Craigslist... my internship was 12 weeks though so I think 3 months was what I needed. Doubt many will be cool with a 2.5 month, but I have no clue. Just make sure you have like a sublease agreement and the landlord is in on it or something because you never know when someone is full of shit or running a scam.
Sent you a PM
Thanks blackhat, mines 10 weeks so it makes for a tricky situation...
10 weeks, bit the bullet, wasn't a big deal as I'm sort of from the area. Found it on craigslist pretty early on (march?). just gotta keep looking and try to visit in person if you can- too many scams out there.
do you have any friends at Columbia or NYU? I met friends of friends who managed to hook me up with a sublet room in Stuy Town (not the best, but very cheap - I paid $600 for 5 weeks). I also stayed in NYU dorms on 5th & 10th for 2 weeks but I don't recommend that at all - coming from abroad the only option if you're not enrolled on any NYU courses is to live in a shared room with no A/C. It got to 109F in the room one night and my roommate and I slept outside!

Very easy.

Do you know where to live in NYC this summer? I checked out EHS (www.studenthousing.org) Looks like some great buildings...and I can rent just for the summer. Anyone ever live here?
no alcohol in the dorms, guests have to be signed in before 9pm
Wow, NYU dorms it is.
I know a bunch of summer analysts lived at SVA.
http://www.schoolofvisualarts.edu/studentaffairs/index.jsp?sid0=237&sid…
The problem with a lot of NYU dorms is that they don't have AC.
how strict are they/can they actually be on no alcohol in the building.. If i'm over 21 and live in a single room, would they even bother checking ever? It's not like I would be having huge parties
EHS blows
very expensive
terrible properties
I've been staying with EHS since August 2009 and I have really loved the experience!
I've had the opportunity to live at St. George Residence. which is located in an amazing neighborhood with tons of things to do. Everyone I met was very knowledgeable and not to mention very nice!
Although EHS does have a Alcohol policy, i think it is very reasonable. After reading the online guide at Studenthousing.org I learned that if you are 21 or older you are allowed to have alcohol, while living at the St. George Clark Residence.
Finding a place to live in New York City can be a daunting task. However, the process has been made so much easier by choosing to live with EHS . Just remember that that price includes rent, utilities, furniture, 24 hour security, gym membership, lots of great discounts to attractions around the city AND a safe, friendly environment.
Just thought i would share my experience!!
Best
I'm stuck between SVA and NYU dorms (hayden/goddard).. anyone have any advice/recommendations?
