NYU Stern Finance Transfer GPA
Has anyone here transferred to Stern Finance? How hard is it, what kind of GPA do you need and what are they looking for in terms of Essays?
NYU transfer acceptance rate
NYU Stern describes the transfer process on their website.
One user explains that the acceptance rate is less than 2% for external applicants to Stern.

Which uni are you from, or are you an internal ?
External, school ranked around UDelaware. 3.8 GPA for junior transfer, sats not required, got a couple weeks left till deadline
You are going to be a junior transfer? How are you going to get the credits in ?
I don't know if it'll be worth it, even with summer classes not sure if you can make the credits/transfer them.
I've taken all of the required pre-requisites for Stern, except the 4 business classes taken sophomore year (not required for transfer, but would have to be taken by graduation). What are you talking about not worth it? Stern is a target while my school won't even get me in front of boutiques, let alone firms like lazard, barclays, etc. (my target firms since I have bad hs stats, NOT GS/MS/JPM). In any regard, Stern provides the best undergraduate finance education in the country with exception to Wharton
Not really related to your OP, but this is the first I've heard of 'target firms.' You seem to have a misconception that banks are like colleges, where everyone who gets into Harvard also got into his local state school. Completely false. Getting offers is a crap shoot. People get offers at GS and nothing at BAML. I got through supers with MS/GS/JPM, some elite boutiques, signed with a top group at a different BB. Didn't even get a first round at Barclays. It can be random. Apply everywhere.
In that case you should be fine, I can't say for externals but internals have it much easier and a 3.8 will definitely get you there. That having been said I hope your credits can transfer, there are a lot of cases where they don't due to the university you're coming from.
hi i am looking for Corporate Finance: A Valuation Approach by Simon Benninga & Oded Sarig if anyone is having this book or know download link , please let me know
Im also looking at potentially transferring to Stern. OP it says you need Calculus I or higher correct? I haven't taken that but I have taken Business Calculus. Do you know if this excludes me?
End up getting in?
Business Calculus is bullshit. It won't ding you but it will hurt a little.
NYU Transfer...Need Help (Originally Posted: 03/06/2011)
This is a question for any NYU undergrads in the school of business.
I am currently a Junior at the University of Miami with a 3.4 Cumulative GPA looking to transfer to NYU. My goal is to break into the Ibanking field...
I would like to know how difficult it would be to transfer into Stern or even the Arts/Science school at NYU. I am aware I would probably have to do an extra semester or 2 in order to make this possible. My GPA is so low because I was a first class fuck up my freshmen year but my last 2 gpa's have been 3.6 and 3.74 respectively.
Would like to hear any thoughts anyone has on this matter.
College Confidential
You are currently a Junior? So you would transfer in as a senior? Not sure that it's possible to apply for transfer after your sophomore year.
As the above posters stated, you can't transfer in as a senior. You will be able to transfer up to two years worth of credits, so you will redo your junior year.
He mentioned he was willing to go an extra year. He can still transfer, he will just be a junior.
Some help from this forum... I called and you can transfer at any point you want but as one person above stated you can only transfer 64 credits. That being said I would have to do another year. I just wanted to know the likelihood of getting into NYU with my credentials.
Also, the reason for transferring is Umiami (a great school don't get me wrong) has no opportunities for investment banking and very little for other areas of banking.
Transferring into Stern is competitive, I've heard a minimum 3.7 is recommended by the admissions office, but of course that shouldn't deter you from applying. If you do transfer, I would recommend focusing heavily on the essays to note your freshman year screw-up (everyone has that, including me), and focus on why you'd be a good fit for the school after transferring. It's obviously gonna be an uphill battle for you because your GPA isn't too hot, but its not impossible.
WFY...How much easier (aka minimum GPA) for the Arts and Science school say Econ major with a Finance minor???
there is no finance minor in NYU - the only minor offered in Stern for non-STERN students is "Business Studies". If you plan on entering finance from NYU CAS, then you must network on your own (you CANNOT rely just on the career center because as expected, you will get crushed by Stern kids).
All the successful (FO office type roles) NYU CAS Econ majors I've met and heard of had interned during the year and networked heavily on their own, whether it be from the clubs, societies, business frats and such. Among the 5 CAS econ successful people I've met, 4 of them were double majoring in math.
I hope this gives you an idea of how much effort you need in order to compete with Stern kids if you're a non-Sternie.
.
stern only takes transfers coming in as sophomores/juniors. if you are a rising senior, i dont think it's possible.also ocr for finance related opportunities during summer 2011 has come to an end
How wealthy are your parents to be jumping schools like this and losing a year of college credits? (at probably 50k a year when everything is said and done). Please do not tell me you have financed this with loans?
Thanks...Smitty
It'll be tough but certainly possible. As someone mentioned, you'll probably need a 3.7+ to be competitive. Regardless, you should probably open up your options a bit. There are other more transfer-friendly schools that can land you an IB-gig, such as IU-Kelley and Villanova.
I was under the impression that a general degree at NYU really wasnt that difficult to get admitted into
i would not listen to the people who are telling you its not worth it to transfer. I was at a complete non target and told many people in the industry that i wanted to transfer to a better school and they told me it wasnt worth it.
long story short, I got accepted for transfer to 2 ivy league schools and 2 other targets and picked the one i liked more. I have had so many networking sessions in the 8 months that ive been here its crazy. without transferring i would not have any of these opportunities. not to mention, I also learn alot more here.
Best decision i ever made.

Stern will be very tough with a 3.4 GPA. CAS will be easier. If you can get your GPA up to 3.6 or even higher, you would have a good shot with NYU CAS. I hear that it's possible to break into IB with an econ degree from NYU but I can almost assure that recruiters will ask you why you're in CAS and not Stern.
Not that transferring would be a terrible idea, but it certainly is possible to go places coming out of UM... you just gotta network/hustle. Sure, NY will be tough (but not impossible, I know kids that have done it), but you should look at regional places like Raymond James in Tampa or even SunTrust in Atlanta. There are also quite a few boutiques in the South FL area that you could look into. I remember interviewing with some random mortgage fund in Miami when I was going through recruiting last year, so there are definitely possibilities at UM. But if you're already a junior, you better get your shit together... NOW
Hustle? You don't know anything about hustling. Please don't comment if you have no idea what you are talking about.
And yes I do agree with a few of you who said it is worth it to transfer. I had to scratch and scrap to just get 2 interviews one in IBD and one in S/T. People that I've talked to in targets are getting 8-10 interviews and landing about 15-20% of them. Numbers just aren't in my favor.
And no I do not want to work at a Private Bank in Miami or do some other bullshit WM gig. Thanks for the input and people really need to some commenting on things they have no clue about.
Whatever you say kid... best of luck to you
237 banana points from all the comments that you leave...I wish I was a "Senior Baboon" like you
The GPA could hurt you, but your essay will have to be bad ass. Additionally, I would not recommend transferring as a Junior.
Once you transfer there (assuming you get in) will probably be the worst decision of your life - why? Because you will be 3 years behind all of the other Ibanking wannabees there. Not only that, but if you are arguing that NYU Stern has better resources than U of Miami - (which I would agree with) - you will be competing for those resources with all those other students who have been tapping those networks for a few years longer than you.
At U of Miami - or any other school or non-target it will be easier to stand out as "a big fish in a small pond" than as a "small fish in a huge ocean."
You are much better off networking your ass off where you are.
Just my thoughts.
My buddy did sopho transfer. His school was around 30-40 in rank, along with a 3.7-3.8 in econ.
How Hard is it to Transfer to NYU Stern? (Originally Posted: 09/14/2015)
I am currently a freshmen at a highly ranked state college. I aim to apply for transfer after my first year, and am wondering how difficult it is to get in as a external transfer. I know a high GPA, good extracurriculars, and good recs are a given, but what other aspects should I focus on?
external is very hard - generally less than 2% acceptance
internal transfer is apparently much easier based on my experience
Not very difficult. It is highly selective, don't get me wrong, but I know a few people who have been able to transfer in as sophomores.

Has anyone here transferred to Stern Finance as a Junior? How hard is it, what kind of GPA do you need and what are they looking for in terms of Essays?
I'm desperate! lol. I'm going balls out on the essays, but idk how hyped up it is since college confidential says Stern=Dartmouth lolwat
My stats: 3.8 GPA, okay state school ranked in the top 100, not sending sats, hs stats aren't considered much either (they were shit though) for NYU
Also.. I have PWM internship
The app also asks if you want to be considered for CAS, is it even worth it applying there? I heard kids from Cas work Hr/Bank telling...
I posted this before, but wanted to post it again for the evening crowd. In b4 someone brings that up
A good friend of mine (pre-transferring, that bitch) made that exact move. She had a 3.8 as well, but no internships and only 1 extracurricular. Was a foreign student, too. My school is barely top-100 (I had to look at a top 200 list once to find my school, so I guarantee yours is better).
What year was this? College admissions get more competitive each year... College confidential is scaring the shit out of me with kids from Northwestern and Rice applying to transfer to Stern
What I'm trying to say is to chill the fuck out. I don't want to sound like I know what I'm talking about on this (because I honestly don't), but I would think you've got this. And to be fair, the chick I knew had senior-level credits and still made the transfer.
And College Confidential is like WSO but for overeager parents. Take what they say with a grain (read: container) of salt. And good luck!
I think the essays are actually crucial to getting accepted into Stern. A friend of mine from a semi-target school was rejected from Stern (when applying as a junior). He had a 4.0 and a PE internship under his belt.
Don't do CAS. Stern or bust
The essays are key. Did he just send something generic? Was Stern not his first choice and did he not do research on specific things that Stern would provide?
I highly doubt it. He is always on top of his game, brilliant kid. I guess it doesn't matter anymore since he got a IBD SA offer from a BB.
I don't mean to scare you. Just wow the readers.
Is he reliant on financial aid? NYU is biased towards richer people I think, who pay full boat since they want to maintain a solid yield, because they don't have cash for transfers
I don't think financial aid was an issue. I know a few transfer students who had pretty decent financial aid. He was not poor according to my knowledge, and I am sure he would not mind taking out loans for Stern.

No such thing as senior transfer (and you missed junior transfer), so yeah it's too late.
technically you can still transfer in going into your senior year, however only two years of your previous schooling will transfer over. Since nyu has residency requirments, you would have to spend at least two years there.
3.4 is too low as far as gpa goes, but if you don't mind the extra year than it wouldn't hurt you to try.
3.4 is too low to be considered for transfer to stern.
No hope
go to a shitty state school, i recommend mount holymothafoke college
HAHAHAAHAHAH
Regarding Internal Transfer to Stern (Originally Posted: 04/21/2014)
I recently internally transferred to Stern, after doing a considerable amount of research on it on the internet and deciding that it was what I wanted to do. Now that the process is over, I just felt like I should write a post somewhere that disputes what is commonly said by people that claim to be in the know on this subject. That is, I don't think internally transferring to Stern is that difficult. Or, I am just incredibly lucky. Today I was accepted to Stern from CAS econ with a 3.53 GPA and 2180 SAT. I am not a minority, and although I have had a few interesting working experiences, none of them are related to finance at all. I am a pretty good writer, but I also don't feel like my essay was particularly good. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure why I got in, just that I am happy as hell that I did. I simply felt some kind of duty to put this message out there: if you are thinking about transferring to Stern, but are too afraid to because the majority of people WSO and elsewhere say it is outrageously difficult, don't let that stop you.
Respect
I am just, so thankful for your words of encouragement. In fact, I applied to Stern for EDII as a freshman and got rejected. Stern has always been my dream school and even up until now, I haven't give it up yet. As an international applicant from Canada, the competition for the 2014 year was insane, I see amazing people getting rejected by Ivies and NYU. But sometimes I guess I'm just such an arrogant person, I love NYC, I love finance, I love Stern, so I'm going to work my butt off to transfer there with all I got. Do you think NYU would look down at Pace and CUNY (since they are not as well known as Fordham or any other NYC school)? I've been so helplessly in love with the city (I've thought about this million times, so this is a rational decision). Seen too many posts of discouraging comments about transferring already, your last sentence definitely cheered me up.
Congrats man
how difficult is it to transfer into...say a stern level college? (Originally Posted: 04/29/2007)
preferably after freshmen year, but after second would also be okay. what else can i do besides maintaining a 3.8ish to have a decent chance?
I thought you weren't insecure and in fact were set on going to case western.
lol, are you twelve? grow up.
keep your gpa high, very important
develop good relationships with a few professors and get to know them well so they will write you killer recommendations
do some business/finance related extra-curriculars to show your true interest in business
make sure to take all the prerequisite classes (macro, micro, financing/managerial accounting, etc) and do well with them. schools will look at these more than they will look at "The History of Musicial Theater"
also
id consider applying to umich unc uva nyu indiana (safety) cal ucla
best of luck.
stop wasting this board's time asking the same question over and over and over. case western isn't that great, your chances of transfering aren't that great, especially to stern which would be nearly impossible. stop being so god damned insecure - you have what you've got, so stfu
thats pretty harsh
i know kids from community colleges who have transferred to ivies such as cornell and yale
work hard have a monster gpa and a reason to stand out and you might get lucky
i go to a top 25 mba program (part time)... my current school doesn't allow us to transfer part time to full time..... i've been here a year ... and have done well in school.... would it be possible to transfer into a full time top 10 mba program? Can you even do this? if so, how feasible?
Thanks.
LOL.
Mr White, you're hilarious dude..
Stern is a shitty school where you overpay for tuition. Mostly filled w/ gay people too
true, except theres maybe 2-3 gay people in stern. stern is mostly asian/indian. nyu cas is filled with gay kids though.
go find out at collegeconfidential.com
this is an ibanking board
nyu is hard to get into, gets K's and K's of apps. regardless of its 'weak' (according to ibo.com board members) credibility as seen by the lashing it gets on this board.
all those applying aren't gaywods either.
