How many investment banking analyst are there in US?

I was wondering how big the community is but I couldn't think of any actual statistics. Does anybody have a good idea on how many investment banking analysts are hired each year by BB/EB/MM firms? How big are the size of training classes at BB/EB/MM firms? Just curious

Not sure if the 350 answer is a troll...

I'd say ~1,000/year across the US (including regionals). Maybe a little more. And maybe 1/4 stay on for a 3rd year. So at any given time, ~2,250 1st 2nd and 3rd years combined.

Figure 9 BB's at ~80+/class including regionals (w/some higher and some lower) 15 MM/EB at ~15/class on avg (guys like Jefferies and Stifel hire a lot, while EVR/BX hire less)

Idk. That's my back of the envelope calc. And yes I know the math comes in a tad shy of 1,000.

This is actually a fairly common interview brain teaser question (market sizing). At least it's a bit more fun than "how many stoplights are there in Manhattan?"

Let's see:

GS/MS/JPM/BofAML/CS/UBS/DB/Barcap/Citi = BB's (9)

At the BB's roughly 100 on average will be recruited for IBD. That's 900 IBD first years alone. Throw in your other banks (Nomura, SocGen, BNP, etc.), your boutiques and it's a safe bet the number is ~1,500 first years. If you throw in other front office roles (Research, S&T), then that number is even higher.

In other words, there will be plenty of sheep and monkeys on the street next year.

Judging based on training in NYC last year (where are the regional / global analysts get trained including those in Asia / Europe), there are roughly 150-175 first year analysts globally. Of those, ~100 will be in the NY offices. Teams in regional offices are a lot, lot leaner.

actually man if we take that 50 number and 9 BB's youre looking at 450. to be 1 out of 450 globally is pretty special in my opinion. not as selective as say MBB but still a pretty exclusive group nonetheless. obviously youre a college student and have accomplished jackshit to this pt in your life but no reason not to feel good about your accomplishment.
