what is morgan stanley tmt?

Jan 18, 2010

sorry, it's with the media & telecoms team, not tmt..

What interests you? Do you have a preference for industry or product?

LevFin allows you to specialize on a part of a transaction, whereas in TMT you will probably do a lot of pitches and different types of transactions.

Both are top notch places, and will work you very hard.

I assume this is for SA? One thing to keep in mind is that GS is notoriously stingy with FT offers - some groups only convert 25% of SA's to FT offers.

I wonder how it takes MS longer to finalize groups for FT yet finish up SA placements so quickly.

it's probably for FT since SA recruiting is just starting

Jan 18, 2010

maybe a different region since FT group placements in NY has not been decided yet.

Both are good groups though. Tough choice

Jan 19, 2010

thanks, it's neither SA nor for the US region. I am mostly interested in as much free time as possible

Jan 19, 2010

Well, by that token alone, probably go for GS as lev fin, as a product, is relatively dead right now.

Just my 2c.

No it's not - junk bond issuance this year is huge as companie's refinance. There's been $14.4bn this year so far which is the fastest start since 1980. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/50e5c19e-038a-11df-a601-...
Also most lev fin teams were cut to the bone so at the moment we're working with fewer people than ever on nearly as many deals although thankfully they aren't as complicated as the PE transactions back in the day.

To the OP - if you want free time then don't choose between two of the most competitive and focused banks on the street. You said this is outside NY? if it's in Europe then GS lev fin (in terms of work and relative position) isn't as good as MS Media and Telecoms

I'd go for GS

Jan 19, 2010

if you want more free time, go with GS levfin, if you want to get crushed, go with MS media/telecom
