Offer Help! - Received a FT IBD offer

Here's the situation. I received a FT IBD offer from a BB, after having interviewed with several groups. Recruitment told me these groups were the only with availability at this point. After the final round, I was asked to rank them according to my interest. I really nailed all of my interviews with all of the groups, and I connected well with two of the groups, I received GREAT feedback from all of the groups about my interviews. Anyway, I was told that the group I had ranked in the middle, had the most need so they made the offer to that group. My question is this, is there any way I can get re-routed to my number one choice? One of the VP's and I connected really well, we had good conversation, and I nailed the technicals to which he complimented me. He gave me his card and told me to follow up with how things turn out. Would it be appropriate for me to contact him and let him know the situation with the intention of seeing if there's a possibility that he can bring me to that group? Would he have the authority to override recruitment/hr with making the option for placement into his group?

Thanks guys, please give me your advice as I know many of you have a lot of experience.

Be happy you have an offer this late in the process, especially at a BB.

I say don't risk it and take what you can get. It's not like you're getting a dud group, it's your second choice which I'm assuming is either M&A, Lev Fin, Financial Sponsors.

Yes. I would follow up and see if the VP will "claim" you. Although, watchout if the other groups MD/VP really wants you and has seniority (even though they are both MD's one will have more "power" within the firm) you may have to stick with that group. Your about to be living with these people for the next 2 years, you might as well try to get some place you really want to be.

Thanks Gekko. That's how I feel, I don't see the problem in trying my best to get placed in my ideal group. This guy in my top group is a VP though, not an MD. I didn't interview with an MD for either group. Will that make a difference in terms of my chances? Also, question for you Gekko, with recruitment/hr putting together the offer to that group, will that make it nearly impossible for anyone in the groups to change it so that I'm re-routed to the other group?

No it's not impossible. Why don't you just have a sit down with the VP and tell him what you want? It's not that hard. If he is convinced, he will get you in his group.

BTW: Everyone's right, don't fuck this up and be a whiner. Take what you got, if your in a premiere BB.

I had a similar situation and to be honest - I would most definitely contact the VP right away and let him know the situation. Tell him you want to be on his team, that you rated his team as number one, and see what he says. He may say "well HR has control of that stuff" which means - he's not willing to stick his neck out to help you out, or he could say "Let me take care of this" and then hopefully he'll get you on his team... HR might get a little annoyed - as they act like the GODs of analyst recruitment, but in reality they're not. So don't let HR boss you around like that (I'm kind of a rebel - and my HR actually hates me so take what I recommend with a grain of salt). But the above post was right, you'll be spending 2 years of your life on that team (and it will seem like so much longer becuase of the hours) so go for what you want. You already have the offer, so don't be scared that they'll renig it for something as stupid as this.
