Offer rescinded bc of DUI

Hi all,

I’m pretty much crushed at the moment because I have been applying for jobs for the past 5 months. Had several close calls of being hired (I think). But nothing worked out until a few weeks ago. The position was for a trader/research/pm role. I was their top candidate. We had 5 interviews over a course of 2 months. They finally made me an offer for a six figure salary.

Start date was this Monday. They called me on the weekend to tell me that during the background check they saw 2 DUI and that they need a explanation. Did my best explaining. They said they talked among themselves and talked to their clients as to how they would feel. He claims that his clients would not be comfortable giving his company money if they hired a person with a DUI. So they rescinded the offer. Their problem that they vocalized to me was that it will hurt their reputation bc this information is public and anyone can look it up. The state that I reside in, does not allow DUI to be expunged.. ever. They are there for life unless the governor pardons.. which is nearly impossible.

Is my career over? I’ve dedicated nearly 14 years of my life to finance. What do I do??? Past few years I was operating my own small fund by myself so didn’t have to think of this problem. But recently decided to look for jobs because I’m looking to get married and want consistent cash flow and less stress than operating my own company. Last DUI was 2 years ago. Prior to that I was at big 4 for many years so didn’t have to worry about the DUI I had 7 years ago.

Everyone makes mistakes. I highly doubt you'd like to have your lowest lows on public record. His punishment was that they're on his file permanently, he doesn't "deserve" to not have a second chance or gain employment.

For what it's worth:

the first DUI i had was 11 years ago. I was sitting in my car. My car was turned off. I was waiting for my friend to come pick me up. A state tropper came along and gave me a DUI. While, my friend also came during the trooper's checks. I wasn't even driving

Second DUI: It was actually thrown out in court. I got a DWI instead. I had 3 beers.

For people saying I deserve this. Sure, here's a fact: 95% of american population has at one point or another gotten behind a vehicle and drove. And if they were pulled over, they would had gotten a DUI. I was the unlucky person who got pulled over.

I understand drinking and driving is terrible. I will never do it again ever (obviously). I have not even touched a stupid drink for almost two years ago. People make mistakes.

Laws are messed up. In my state, I can rob a bank or stab someone and have those expunged in time. Look at the highest office on US.. everyone is committing crimes.
