OHIO STATE MSF
I have heard a little bit about this program and the website looks good as far as courses go. However, I did not have any luck finding placement info or alumni base. Does anyone know anything about the Presence of Ohio State in the North East or where graduates place in terms of IB,PE,S&T..etc?
Website by the way is : http://www.cob.ohio-state.edu/smf
Hope you got 50k under your mattress
Their under's Fisher Future is solid, albeit far far far less superior than that of established institutions, for obvious reasons. That's the as best as you can get from the Buckeye for IB.
So don't bank on its reputation or connection. You have to do it the hard way by reaching out almuni on the street by yourself
Yea I didnt really think there would be much in the way of BB placement and 50K is pushing it for an untested program. Im starting to think the only masters worth getting are in Europe.
Not true dude just keep looking
Princeton, baby, Prince-fucking-ton
I would love to get into Princeton, Dont think it is going to happen though as I would have about a year of math pre-reqs to get through before they would even look at me. I am not opposed to MFE type programs it is just that I have only taken 1 stats and 2 calc courses in addition to my econ.curriculum.
Where (region/city) do you want to work?
I would like to eventually work in the NE, NY specifically. Not for prestige or anything, but because my family is in NY and I was born and raised there. I am not opposed to working elsewhere for a few years either...I think it could be an awesome experience. I just started a topic about Euro/Can Masters for that very reason.
It is heavily covered on my site. The program is brand new so no placements. It looks like a great program.
I would steer clear of tOSU until they have been around for a few years. You don't want to be in those first couple of classes where the school is still putting everything together. Go to a school thats been around, has a track record and alumni from the program. Vandy is good. Princeton obviously is also. In the Big 10, UIUC isn't that bad. And, UVA nd Duke arn't bad MMS programs.
There are decent programs in Europe as well
50k is a very high price tag for a program with little rep
Where the hell did my post go, WTF.
The program director of the OSU program used to run the UIUC program. They have CFA partner Program certification. They have a well k ow brand. 50k is the average price for mSF programs.
Villanova is 30k and places in NYC well. I have detailed placement stats if interested.
Now now Anthony, that state of the union has gotten you in the mood to expand on the facts. According to a highly credible website, the OSU program is the 7th most expensive in the world. Stop hanging out with eok and Rachel Maddow so much silly boy.
Most active MSF programs are in the 40-50k range. Not saying it is cheap, but saying it is in the range. Yes, it is a first year program, but the talent and standards in place are significant.
So maybe this belongs in a different thread but the whole ROI of OSU as a new program kinda got me thinking. We talk about how important the rankings are for everything from MBA programs to desks to banks themselves. One thing we haven't really discussed (at least to the same extent as the aforementioned topics) are the HSW of the MSF world. Obviously MIT and Princeton are very near, if not clearly, the top of the class but what rounds out the top ten?
Princeton is tops MIT is second because of the brand
Then you have the core group. These can't be ranked because they are so regionally focused. Nova, Vandy, BC/BU/Bentley, Florida, Claremont, UIUC/Purdue/OSU, Tulane.
You have many top programs out of the states, but they are not a slam dunk if you want to come back to the USA.
Would you also include WashU in this group?
Paying 50k to attend Open Shoes University for a Masters in Finance degree sounds like a horrible plan.
Suppose you went to a tiny, unknown university and can't get a job. A MSF from OSU will not only increase your skills, give you another shot at recruiting, open you up to a very large and loyal alumni base, but allow you to go after better jobs than you would otherwise not be able to get.
If you went to Yale for UG this isn't what you want. If you went to south Dakota state U, this is a good opportunity.
Well, at least folks have something to hope for during the football season
I just did a quick linked in search. First 2 pages I found a inst sales guy at UBS, MD at evercore, banker at UBS, FI trader at ML, er UBS, director at Macquarie ,miller millichap associate, analyst at Barclays, analyst, VP JPM, IB at GS, associate at UBS.
OSU has rep on the street. I would imagine they have a lot of alumni in Cleveland, Chicago, milwakee, etc.
That is pretty damn impressive. You had mentioned BC, BU, and Bentley a few posts ago, would you say that the region they cover includes NYC and Connecticut in addition to the Boston area?
I think BC and BU probably have a wider rep than Bentley. All three are good for Boston.
The schools reputation will help you get that first job. Once you get work experience you won't be limited to the original area. MSF degrees don't have the cache or top brands that an MBA has. Just like with the MBA, outside of the T15 schools, your dealing with very regional.
SUNY-Buffalo offers an extremely high quality MSF degree with $10 K TOTAL TUITION.
10k if your a NYS resident and unfortunately name brand is more important than quality.
Blasphemy!!!
Haha, I agree, but in finance it is true. The value of name brand in certain industries sometimes trump that of actual skill. Sad, but those are the rules we play by.
Oh shit, my bad.
WUSTL is an amazing program. People haven't asked me about it lately and it slipped my mind. Completely my bad.
Anthony, Would you happen to know off-hand what the placement is for Villanova in the trading route, I hear good things about the trading lab? This is still my first choice of MSF and after seeing the curriculum it looks like it would get a decent amount of attention from trading positions.
I would put Northeastern easily above Bentley and make a case for it above BU and on par with BC.
@ High - Not a lot of traders. I think out of the 100 MSF alumni we will have when this class graduates (2011), maybe 3-5 are or have been traders. Mostly banking/PE. I know a ton of Villanova UG's who are going into trading though so the route and alumni connections are there.
The Nova MSF is also competing in the Rotman competition as well as the yearly CME competition. You have opportunity to get some trading action while you are there.
Can MSF students use the Undergrad resources (resume drop,OCR, etc) ?
Yeah, MSF students come in as analysts and typically compete with UG students.
Hey Anthony,
Does Villanova offer trips to NY, Chicago, etc. for recruitment purposes?
gmat score for Ohio State MSF? (Originally Posted: 12/01/2010)
I was just wondering what would an appropriate score would be for OSU considering that this is its first year taking applicants. Would it be lenient like the Duke MMS when they first started out?
I also have a 3.5 gpa in finance and if it also helps, my dad went to osu (I don't know if legacy applications would have preference for a masters degree)
thanks
The program just started, so it's hard to tell. If you join Anthony's MSF LinkedIn group, I believe there is someone from their admissions who'd be willing to answer questions.
My guess is that 650 would be just fine. Also, note that your gmat score is only one part of your application.
I would be willing to bet that a 600 would do it in their first year
I have a friend who gets into the program in 2013 with 710 gmat.
OSU accepts a range of gmat scores. They really look holistically at your application. I wouldn't focus so much on one element, but on the overall strength of your application.
Brand New Ohio State MSF (Originally Posted: 10/26/2010)
Hey guys,
So a very generous and helpful individual let me know about the brand new MSF offering at OSU. I have a meeting set up with the program director and wanted to see if you guys had any questions you wanted me to relay? I am extremely excited to see a new program being rolled out, especially one with such a well known brand.

Ask him how their game went vs Wisco went the other week
Hahahahah
Might avoid that topic.
Can you ask them how they are going to handle OCR? Like will the MSF students be lumped with the MBA for grad or be able to use undergrad OCR resources etc. I know it's pretty standard from place to place, but still curious
I will deff ask her that. Keep the questions coming.
Building on OCR, will it feed into positions in Chicago or NYC? Thanks.
Ask he/she how well she thinks they will do in terms of IB/Corp Finance recruiting and how (if) they can compete with the MIT, Princetons, etc. that have already been established.
Slap the Buckeye on my behalf will you ?
Oh, and tell him that Terrelly Pryor is overrated
OSU well-known in academics?
I thought it was a sports school.
Maybe the Masters in Physics can teach Terrell Pryor how to finally throw that spiral he has yet to experience...everything that guy puts up is a total duck
Ask about what the school is mainly prepping students for (IB, AM, trading, etc)? Their faculty are much more known for corporate finance, so I'm wondering if IB will be their main area for placements.
Also, ask if it's a cohort program, or if the MSF students will just be taking the MBA finance electives?
When are they gonna start? Next fall, or is this still a few years away?
By the way Anthony, where do you think this program is gonna rank (what MSF programs do you expect it to be comparable to)?
Anthony will you be in Columbus for the meeting?
No guys, I am going to do it over the phone. I am neither that important or that pimp to be flying out to meet with people. If I ever am on campus I will let everyone know and we can do drinks or something.
good deal
